The Comity Convention.
Before our next issue the County
Convention for Orangeburg County will
have met and mado its nominations.
The heart of every honest Republican
is anxiously awaitiug the result. If
proper sort of nominations are placed iu
the field, there will be no doubt of the
sucflsenn of the Republican party in this
County on the l?tb of October next. But
it should bo remembered that there is
already a dmaon in our party, and that
tho Democrats are waiting for an op
purtunity to put a ticket of their owj
iu tho field. A Democratic Chairman
has been appointed for this County, aud
when tho time comes, and a chaucc is
offered, be will not be slow iu orgauiz
. ing his party. In the event that there
should be two Republican tickets pre
sented to the publio, the Democrats
will have an open road to victory, in
] ppito of our three thousand majority
The Charleston A'eics, a journal that
has A deep seated and hearty hatred to
wards the blacks, advises the Democratic
chairmen, throughout tho State, to be
on the qui vioc, and whenever there
is a chance to slip in their men,
to do so, and spurn tho support of the
colored votors, Tho Nevct is usually
cautious?hnving brains enough to look
a littlo way beyond its own nose?but
when it presented this advioe to the
white people of South Careliua, wc dau't
think, after tho second sober thought,
tltafc it oould see any wisdom or humane
policy in its course Shame on tho man
who in one iustancc begs the colored
vote, and in. another, damns it. Col
ored men, tho Charleston A'eics has no
use for you; advises the party to do all
they can to have you put a good ticket
in the field, where it is certaiu that you
are sure to urn, but wherover tho Demo
crats may be in tho majority, its policy
is not to touch you. Was thero ever
such an infernal spirit of downright
hellishncss exhibited through the
columns of any newspaper before, except
where" ignorance, aud hearts bronzed
With the seething corruption of bell,
control the editorial pen ? It has been
our desire to bavo the Republican party
act so as to appeal to tho masses of the
people, both white aud black, but how
can any expect the colored people to
beod such teachings when such lamn
able doctrines as the above are practised
by their enemies ? Does the Charleston
Aac's propose to make a chattel of the
' Republican party ? Docs it imagine
that the sunlight of intelligence does
not illumine the path of say but its
carpet-bag editors ?.It is really mistaken
-f ' _
if its paralytic uerves have succeeded
io makiog it bo full of conceit. Theo
are some th i ngs that that j ournal can advise
us on, and which we will consider, and,
P?vadvcnture, act upon, but whin it
resorts to downright devilment, we loose
our patience with it, and feel more like
damning the thing tn ?tnrjral infamy
than blessing it with a compliment upon
moving into its new quarters. But lot
us return to the County Convention.
j It is so, that the party in this County
has never before occupied a position so
uncertain as the present. Heretofore
a ticket placed in the field, and labelled
'??Republican" was shuro to win. No
notion was over taken of the character
pf the men upon it. The Stute Conven
tion promised a reformation in this
particular. No party is laboring harder
to have good men placed upon the
County tioketi than the State Ezeoutive
Committee. They are men of intelligence,
and feel that the Republican party must
live louger than two years. Their
desires in this connection will nevor be
gratified if Republicans, throughout the
State, niauil'cFt no coucern in the mat
ter. Good men must be placed in nomi
nation ; the Republican party is pledged
to Reform; and the Republican party
must live.
The County Convention, which will
assemble on Tuesday must remember
these three facts. The Bolters' support
ers in Orangeburg are looking forward
to the result of its work with anxious
eyes. They think that there will be a
disaffection, no matter who is nominated.
\Ys graut it. No Convention has over
t^sembled that gave entire satisfaction ;
but therp have been such things as Con
ventions presenting ro<m to ihe public
absolutely obnoxious, offensive, peuri.'c
and weak. The Boltors want this to be
the caso on Tuesday next. We knew thoil
programme It is thoir purpose to get
as many men in the regular Convention
as possible; make a nard fight for their
friends; if defeated, to withdraw with as
many delegates as they can persuade
away, assemble immediately afterwards,
put forth careful nominations, and de
clare them the regular nominees They,
tho Bolters, will then call their own
Convention, which will muke no nomi
nation, but ratify the nominations made
by the Bolters from the regulur Con
vention. Cannot every man see how
dangerous and deep-laid this game is?
There is no uso disguising the fact. If
the Republican Convention shows no re
ference to merit on Tuesday, the future
may have some caus-o for apologizing
for the defeat of tho party. Those
ire progressive times of ours, and
progressive men must bo regarded. The
Republican party doesn't want mill
stones tied around its neck. Live, active
und vigorous men arc the only oucs who
can iusure its perpituation.
We have no choice to put beforo the
Convention. We simply want it to do
its duty. It it fails iu that, we say
Irnnkly that its nomiiicos will deserve
Je teat. Gentlemen, we bid you be
true to yourselves, your party und its
principles.

considering that Mr. Touilinsou has no
more control over the brains of the
movement of which ho is the figure
head, than Mrs. I'urtington's mop hud
over tho waves of the broad Atluntie.
Wbeu Orr, Corbiu. Sawyer and Bowcu
give a public pledge that they will not
abandon "the "bolt," even if the
Democrats Dominate a third ticket, it
will be time enough to put their sincer
ity to the touch. I'util then, such u
promise as tbut of Mr. Tomliusou will
not help him or deceive the public.?

speeches and if there is anything in them
more thun the "eloquence" of tho com
monest stump orator we havo never dis
covered it. He Js a man of ^omo ability.
has a good delivery, and (herein oomrUt?q
hie charms of oratory, if there is anything '
aboc.t him. Why, our neighbor on the
corner, under ail of its cditorn! changes
and pecuniary enibarasments, could have
gotten up an editorial that would have
Bounded as eloquent in print as the
speeches of ehe "South Carolina orator."
It is a devlish sight better to be born
luoky then rich.
Messrs. Mclotyre & Co have com
menced the publication of a paper in
Colleton County. The inside is printed
at the North, and the outside, to judge
from its typographical appearance, is
Brat seen in a certain office in Charles
too. If w? are incorrect, we shall be
glad to be so informed. We dispiae "oat
sideH,v and "insides" and desire, for the
sake of the prosperity of our own local
nowspapers, to discourage suoh a system
of distributing Northern ideas and quack
advertisements through the South, as are
practised in certain Counties in this
State. When the Colleton Gazette is
published in Colleton, we shall place it
upon our exchange list. We shall not
do so beioro. Ita being Republican in
politics docs not soften our prejudice
against tho institution that publishes
the first half of it.
Thore is a nasty fight going on bo
tweeu Whipper aud Smalls for tho
Scuatorbhip of Beaufort Couuty. Which
of the two aspirants is ahead we are un
able to say, but we do venture the as
sertion, from our knowledge of the two
men, that so far us intelligence is con
ccrned, Smalls is a dwarf to Whipper.
For conceit, ignorance and pomposity,
Smalls hud no equal in the last Legislature.
The only objection to Whipper is, that
he keeps company with Tomlinson and
Corbln.
The c7?Ur-Pslon Daily Rrpttblicau has
been levied upon by Sheriff Macky. It
appears that he holds a uiotgagfl over
the "shebang," and determning Do.* 10 be J
bespattered by his-own orgin, seized its
presses, type, &o. It is out again, how
ever, but evidently printed iu the office
of tho Suuduy Time* or New*. The
Republican was exceedingly spicy to
ward a its last days.
It has been said by many uf the sup
porters of Tomlinson that he is a man
of extraordinary intelligence. We have
seen tho. gentleman and if there is any
thing extra about him, he has u remark
ably bad way of showing it. He
wouldu't do for a clown, although we
have heard it suggested that Corbin,
his bloated fugleman, would make a
first-rale ring-master.
Bowen and Mackey are hammering
away at each other in Charleston.
Knives aud pistols are sometimes used
by the roughs of both p ?rties ; wheu th !
respective leaders invariibly dec imp.

Will live to tight auutlier day."

if you would have beauty by the bottle
full, all you have to do is to purchase
I lagan's Magnolia Balm. That peerless
beautifier of the complexion not only
heightens natural charms, but renders
even the plainest countenance exceeding
ly attractive- It recalls to the pallid
cheek the rDsy tinge of health, removes
pimples, blotches, roughness, eallowuess
and other blemishes, and impart to the
skin a most delicate fairness and softness
It smooth the furrows caused by time or
e ire and gives face' neck and arms the
plump and engaging appearance of youth
ful beauty. All this is accwiuplished by
the most natural means, vir : by gently
and naturally Stimulating d circulation
in the capillary blood vessels. Besides
being the most effectual aid to beauty
known to modern science.
