One day he had procured the bodies
of two criminals who hud been hung,

The good doctor has, however, gained

followed him; it has caught him, and
seizes hold of his feet with both hands.
At this climax of terror the doctor

At this the spectre let go its hold,
and moaned feebly these words :?
"Pitty, good hangman ! have pity on

Ho was hanged for high treason.

Tn reply to 0' W. C, P. 168, I can
give some facts which may be of use to
somebody, thereby saving life.?The
time between the biting of nn uoimal by
a mad dog aud showtug sigus of hy
drophobia is not less than nine days,
but may be nine mouths After the
animal had become rabid, a bits or
scratch with his teeth upon a person, or
slobber coming iu contact with a soro or
a raw place, would produce hydrophobia
just as soon as though he had been
bitten by a mad-dog. Hydrophobia can
be prevented, and I' will give what is
well known to-be an infallible remedy,
if properly administered, for man or
beast. A dose for a borao or cow should
be about four times as great as for a
person. It is not too lute to give medi
cine any time before the- spasms oome
on.
The first does for a person, is one and
a half ounces eleoampane root, bruiscil,
pat in a pint of new milk, reduced to
one half by boHing, then taken all at
one dose in the morning, fasting until
after noon, or at l???t ? very light diet
after several hours hsve elapsed The
second dose tbe s.tme as first, except
take two ounces of the root; thir l dose
the same as lust, to be takon every
other day ?Threo doses are all that is
iidOured, ??u inen: need uc no tear. This
I know from my own experience, and
know of n number of other cases where
it has been entirely successful. This is
no guess-work. Those persons I allude
to were bitten by their own dogs, that
had been bitten by raMd dogs, aud wero
penned up to see if they would go mud ;
they did go mud, and did bite tho per
sons. This remedy has beeo used in
and about Philadelphia for forty year-*
and longer with great success, and is
known as the Goodmun remedy. I am
acquainted with a physician who told
me he knew of its use for more than
thirty year*, but never knew a case that
failed where it was properly adminis
tered. Among other ouses he montioned
was one where u number of cows hud
been bitten by a mud dog. To halt of
tho number tl ey aduiiuiijtered this rein
ed, to tue other hail' not.. The bittet'
all died with hydrophobia, while those
thut tuok tho eleoaojpane aud milk
sn wed no signs ofthat discuso.?C'

A Pleasant Game --it ca~uHbY

a variety of letters, as, for instance,
New Hampshire, which each one writes
at tho head of hi* paper. Whan all are
ready they write -down ail the words
they cart think of beginning with the
letter N, using Only the letters con
tained ku she word New Haiapthire,<and
no letter more times in the same word
than is used there* At the end of three
or five minutes, as may be agreed upon,
the time-keeper gives notice, and they each
count the words they have writou. The
one who has the roost reads his, the
others looking over their own lists and
erasing any like words that may bo
found there. Each one reads bis un
erased words in turn, and, when all have
finished, the number which each has j
left counts so many on the game. After
N is disposed of take up E, and so on
through the whole word, except when
a letter occurs twice ; then the repeti
1 tion is omitted. At the closo each play

whoever has got the greatest number
wins the game.
Tho Poalal Record says that during

thousand photographs contained in the
above letters. Of course nearly all the
nuneyand valuables were returned to
the owners, but much needless delay,
many charges of dishonesty, etc., might
hav.e been saved if the writers of tho
letters could have been a little moru
careful, and taken tho precaution to see
that their letters wero in mailablo condi
