The Charleston Courier of tho 22d says that L. D. Clark and other gentle men were elected respectively Intendant aud Wardens of our new Town of Lew isvillc, on tho 15th instant. As the election for these officers docs not tnko placo before the 27th instunt, this is making pretty good time for our staid old friend the Courieri which, as a general thing, is not very apt to beat the almanac. Sense vs Sentiment. The Charleston Acte* of the 20th in staut headed auoditorial "Sense vs Sen timent." The Charleston Courier of the 22d instant heads a letter from an 'Old line Democrat. "South Carolina Sentiment." Is the Courier so thoroughly Greeley ized already as to bo able to perceive the difference between "Sense" and "South Carolina Sentiment"??or Joes it Pi.iy mcau to bo particularly hard ou the 'old line Democrat,' since its own conversion to Grecleyistn ? They are willing to take Greeloy, not becauso he is Gree ley, but becauso bo is not Grant. Touching so much of Mr. VauTassel's card as may have reference to the courso of this journal in regard to nccusatims against public officers we have only to say, that had thut geutlotuan furnished us. with a statement of the facts men tioned iu his communication we would have published it editorially with pleas ure, as ajjufficioot aud digaifiod reply to tho article in the Orangeburg Times. In opening our columns to correspon dents, aud in our williognoBs to state facts editorially, we conceive that our editorial duty in saeh matters is fully discharged. But in rogard to matters which assume a purely personal form we have always considered it a gentleman's duty to take care of himself. And we are still of that opinion. Ministers and the License Law. Office or tue Attorney-General, Columbia, 8. 0., May 18, 1872. Hon. Edwin E. Gary, State Auditor: ^ Sir?Upon further reflection and sx 'amination I conclude that ministers or clergymen are not liable to a license tax under the recent law. Yours rospoot fully, (Signed) D. II. We are very glad to sec this socond opiouion of tho Attorney-General, as we aro confident that, however inartificial may have been the wording of the Act in question, it wim never the intention of the Legislature to diminish the slender, hard-earned revenues of those who preach Christ and Him Crucified. Thus much legally and as a matter of humanity; ar'.iatically considered we I rejoice arain at the maturer opinion of Mr. Chamberlain ;?for Heaven knows tho ohurch architecture of this country is sufficiently rude aud unpieusing with out the questionable adornment of paste board licenso cards, nuiled stariugly over pulpits or glcainiug from churoh doors and windows. Neverthclets wo must say (and we say it with all respect to tho cloth generally) that in our opinion many congrcgatious would bo delighted and many souls would bo saved whose lot is otherwise, perdition, if some ministers were compelled by law to pay a tax of a hundcred per cent on their salaries, or quit preaching. Cel. Htil.son's Letter. Col. W. F. Hutson, of this place has written a letter giving his opinion as to the probability of a coalition between the ante bellum Democrats und iho Libc tal Republicans. It was sent by the gentleman to whom it wus addressed to the New York Tribune in which journ al it appeared on the 18th instant. After stating thut both the ''Demo cratic" creed and the Cincinnatti plat form "have the emasculated Stato sov ereignty doctrine, which means just , nothing," aud that "both accept the so lution of past issues, which means that an accomplished wrong is a right," the Colonel udds that -'there is nothing to choose between as far us priueiple is concerned" and closes us follows: Speaking for myself individually, I* am an outsider?I am a conquered sub ject of the United Stutcs Government living iu the Province of South Carolina, being "a citizen" of nowhere, ami belong ing to no party, und feel very little in terest in any. Having lost my liberty, und seeing no promise ol its restoration from either or any party, it can make no difference what name my oppressor is called by. Now as wc have, personally and pro fessionally, tho highest esteem for Col Hutson wo nay be permitted to say that we regret sincerely the terrible condi tion of things so graphically portrayed in the concluding portion of his letter. And as appearances had led us to be lieve thut tho Colouel was both happily aud prosperously situated, wc mny add that we were notouly shocked but aston ished by tho ubove paragraph. As Col. H. is a lutidholdcr here, and a member of the bar, and \\&% never, to our knowledge, taken out "naturalization papers," wo had presumed, of course, that he was "a citlzcnV of the United States. As we have frequently had the pleasure of inspecting very able law documcuts. drnwn by Col.
