so as to give chance for eai !y planting,
for it should be understood, if it is not,
that the potato cannot be planted too
early. With the first mellow soil this
should be done. Plow uot only, but
cul.ivatc and harrow, so as to get the
soil a powdery mellow, which the rotten
turf will favor.
Improved Soap Buuui.es.?We find
in an exchange a paragraph which ten
ches the urt of I'lowiug soap bubbles
that will show the changing col rs of the
rainbow, and may be of special interest
to some of our 'uvonile readers. The
directions are as follows:
Take three-quarters of a pint of water
that hps been boiled and become cold,
and pnt into it a quarter of t n ounce of
Castile soap, cut up fine. Put this into
a pint bottle, and set it iu a saucepan on
the fire; there let it remain an hour or
so, now then giving it a pood shaking,
till the soap is dissolved. Let the fluid
stand quiet forthe impurites und color
ing n.atter oi the soup to settle; then
poor off the fluid and add to it four oun
ce! of glycerine and your soap bubble
solution is ready. Iu au ordinary way
yon may blow the bubbles easily with
a tobacco pipe, but if you wish toattiin
scientific perfection, a glass pipe euu be
emploved with better success. By ad
ding a larger quantity of glyoerine, you
may muke these bubbles so strong that
you can play battledore with thetn.
A Remedy kor Wounds.?A cor
respondent of the Country Gentleman
?lives the following remedy |nr painful
wounds:
Take a pan or shovel, with burning
coals, and sprinkle upon them brown
sugary and hold the wounded part over
tho smoke. In u few minutes the pain
will be allayed, und recovery proceed
rap dly. In my own Ottawa rusty nail
hud mude a bad wound iu the bottom ol
my foot. The pain und nervous irriti
lion were pevcre. 'i his was all removed
by holding it iu the smoke for fifteen
minutes, and I wus ublc to resu ne my
reading in ctmilbrt. Wc have often
recommended it to others, with like re
sults. Lust week one of my men had u
finger nail torn out by a pair of ice
tongs. It became very pniulul, as was
to have been expected. Held iu sugar
smoke tor twenty minutes, tho pain
ccuscd, and it promises speedy recovery.

?It is very annoying, after having set
out a nice lot of sweet potatoes or c.ib

ashes, lime, soot, und, in fa't, everything
we have ever heard of, but uov.r found

we found three or four uf tho worms one

ou a sweet potatoe hill. Acting upon
this hint, we placed stu.il ? pieces of boaid

days will clear these pests out of the

The following is a correct statement of
Cotton raised by Stevens ft Cureton, en IS
acres of stubble land, which was manured
with ICO pounds of Carolina Fertiliser. The
following is the mode of cultivation : It was
thoroughly broken up 12 inches deep, aud
laid off in rows 34 feet wide, and the Far*
tiliser applied in the drill, then bedded e?

day, but owing to the cool and dry weather,
did not eomo up to a stand until about the
1st or June. First working it was rast,
