Soil for the Potato ?Almost any
well drained soil will do. A clay l>am
is probably the best. It is the best us it

cure the one quality, moisture, which, in
our droughty summers, is generally found

be well plowed. And the fall is the
time, aud good at that. Tho soil must
be re-plowed with the first chance in the

well rotted, which it will bo it the plow
ing has beeu done early cm>ugh in the
tall. This is important, this early work,
so as to give ? ha nee for eui iy planting,
for it should be understood, if it is not,
that the potato cannot be planted too
early. With the first mellow soil this
should be done. Plow uot only, but
cul.ivatc and barrow, so as to get the
soil a powdery mellow, which the rotten
turf will favor.

Improved Soap I3uubi.es.?We find
in an exchange a paragraph which tea
ches the art of lb wing soap bubbles
that will show the changing col rs of the
rainbow, and may bo of special interest
to some of our 'uvenile readers. The
directions are as follows:
Take three-quarters of a pint of water
that has been boiled and become cold,
and put into it a quarter of i n ounce of
Castile soap, cut up fine. Put this into
a pint bottle, aud set it in a saucepan on
the fire; there let it remain an hour or
so, new then giving it a cood shaking,
till the soap is dissolved. Let the fluid
stand quiet for the iuipurit'es und color
ing mattor of the soup to settle; then
poor off the fluid and add to it four oun
ces of glycerine and your soap bubble
solution is ready. Iu an ordinary way
you may blow the bubbles easily with
a tobacco pipe, but if you wish toattiin
scientific perfection, a glass pipe cuu he

you can play battledore with them.
A Remedy kor Wounds.?A cor
respondent of the Country Gentleman
gives the following remedy tor painful
wounds:
Take a pan or shovel, with burning
couls, aud sprinkle upon them brown
su-ar, and hold the wounded part over
(ho smoke, in a few minutes the pain
will be allayed, und recovery proceed
rap'dly. In my own ensau rusty nail
had made a bad wound in the bottom ol
my foot. The pain und nervous irriti
lion were Fevcre. '1 bis was ull removed
by holding it in the smoke for fifteen
minutes, and I wus uble to rcsu ne my
reading in comfort. We have often
recuii.im mied it to others, with like re
sults. Lust week one of my men had a
finger nail torn out by a pair of ice
tougs. It lu came very pailllut, as was
to huve been expected. Held iu sugar
smoke lor twenty minutes, the pain 1
cc-ancd, and it promises speedy recover) .
Trapping (Jut Worms' in Gardens'.
?It is vary annoying, after having sei
out a nice lot of sweet potatoes or cab*
bage plants, to see them cut down one
by one by cut worms We have tried
ashes, lime, soot, and, in fa"t. everything
we haeu ever heard of, but uov.r found
anything effective until, by uooidjllt,
we found three or four of tho worms one
morning gathered under a small b t.ird
which had been loll by some childreu
on a sweet potatoe bill. Acting upou
this bint, wo placed smab pieces of board
large chips, etc . all through the patch,
aod we trapped them by huudrcds. The
boards must by lifted curly iu the iiior?
uidg. snd on very warm days ag iin
about noon. A little oare Jor a few
days will clear these pests out of the
gardou. One trial will satisfy any porsou

The following is a correct statement of
Cotton raised by Stevens A Cureton, on 1 i
acres of stubble land, which was manured
witb -100 pounds of Carolina Fertilizer. The
following is the modo of cultivation : It was
thoroughly broken up 12 incbes deep, and
laid ofT in rows 3? feel wide, and the Per?
tiliser applied in the drill, then bedded en
it on the 13th of May, and planted tbe satae
day, but owing to the cool and dry weather,
did not come up loa stand until about the
1st o' June. First working it was ran

trimmed out with a hoe. Second working

inches long, and the middles thrown oat with
a sweep 18 inches wide. One farrow to a
