If Cicero's judgment of human na
ture was not at fault when he said, in
effect, that no man becomes a knave in
a moment, we inter thnt the converse of
the proposition most be equally true and
that (save by the grace of Gcd,) no man
is converted instantaneously into u mod
el of virtue. Applying this rule of)
ethics to political matters, we have grave
doubts of the sincerity of most, if not
all, of the really very sensible und con
fcrvntivc articles which have re
cently appeared iu pcvcral of the leading
Dcmociatie newspapers. Aud our diffi
culty is increased by our uou belief iu
special Providences, and, in these later
days, in divino interposition in any case
whatever. We concede willingly that
no fitter subjects could he found for n
liberal .exorcise of tho gratia Dti than
those Democratic papers whoso utter
ances seem heartfelt and honest ouly
when they declare the "rope and the
rifle" tho best means of silencing politi
cal opponents, or when they ridicule
the Courts and the law wbich arc now
meting out but a small part ot their 1
full d-scrts to scores of midnight ma- j
rauders and assassins; and for their
sukes and for tha sake of humanity at
largo j:q wish earnestly for their
prompt, sincere and thorough ouvorjion
to a political Treed -? which approximates
more closely to a complete recognition
of tho Masters commands than any
other yet devibed oi* men. If these pa
pers were really Sincere in all they now
say it would certainly ho 0110 great step
toward that consummation fUi which all
good nicu so devoutly hope. But our
memory reverts, not at all fondly, to the
fact that jus?, two years ago, these same
Democratic papers xuudo similar conser
vative and liberal professions iu precise.
Iy tho same plausible style as at proaent,
and that a few months afterward they
resumed, with au appotite and a kooo
relish enhauood by temporary abatioenoe,
their bitter and venomous attacks upon

ism. And until we have some guaranty
that they have experienced an actual
and thorough ohaugo of heart wo shall
believe, and shall act upon tho belief,
that their present conversion to virtue
will as before, bo followed by a fatal
relapse into vice. Suoh s guaranty
they bars in their power to give.
That guaranty counts iu their open
adoption of the name of Republican,
and their cordial advocacy of Republi
can principles, as such.
If they are unwilling to give this
pledge f their faith, tbu logical conclu
sion follow* that if, ar they say, the
State it going to the devil, and if, as
they claim, they have tho ability aud
only uccd tho trppwrturdty, tcrpraveot
thtt catastrophe, why then plainly, they
do, ob a simple matter of fact prefer that
the State r\uuUJ go to tho devil rather
tbau that they should give the guaranty
io question. For tho political history
of this State during tho last few years
has showu conclusively that the door of

If they fail of tho opportunity, it it
because thoy do not really desire it?and
saoh halting peitiotism can find no
favor with Republicans, who arc most
truly such theu thoy are moat truly
patriotic.
A Louisville paper states that a lady
member of a Presbyterian Church Soci
ety in that city has been summoned for
trial beforo the church hcsssou, under
an old Mosaic code, for avowing.a belief
in Spiritualism. The violated commru
in cuts alleged are the third, fourth and
seventh. Verses of the twentieth chapter
of Exodus, The lady was cited to ap
pear oh tho.first of April, and replied
that she would be ready for trial if she
could have the privilege of bringing her
own attorney, vthcrwise she would regard
it or a sham affuir.
