cates and slaves still; but the present is
unlike any other period which, has ever

its responsibilities and the exertion of]

"Who ^sufficient for these things?"
The young of our land ! - The task is a
great one and only great endeavor will
accomplish it. They must not stand
upon tho theoretical value of political
dogmas; they must not let their con
victions be contingent on what others
may do or think, but, inspired with a
true love of country, they must put to
the test any plan calculated to redeem
and disenthral the land from the ohaius
of ignorance and error. While this
work is the God given duty of every
Southron whose heart throbs with pa
triotic beat it is binding, peculiarly, up
on the young men of South Carolina."
So says the Democratic Abbeville
Medium. It is excellent advice and we
give it the benefit of a sound Republi
can endorsement.
But cui hono !?"wot's the use
when so many of our youug men out
Herod Herod aud are more old-fogy iah
than their giandfathers. Some of the
elder men of the old school are, we be
l'eye, really beginning to open their eyes
to the fact that something must be doue,
and perhaps, in' time, may so far over
come their prejudices as to be willing to
do it. . And, here aud there, even
young man has the courage to speak out
und act as it his soul and body wcro
really his own aud actually alive in
South Carolina iu this year of grace
1872. But most of them believe that
the word Democracy sums up everything
that is good aud true and worth having
They worship the bare name of Demo
cracy. They lovo it more dearly than
anything else under heaven. The party
is dead and they know it, but they hang
arouud tho corpse with weeping aud
wailing?and, when a ray of Republican
light breaks in, upon tho chamber of
mourning, with gnashing of teeth They

ed ; but they stick by the corpse. They
say that the dear old State is bankrupt
?but they stick by the corpse They
say that even worse is to come?-and
then tbey write peotry to ''Carolina"

But they never raise & hood to aid their
door old State in the one single, possible,
praotioal way. It is n point of honor,
: of sooiulduty, not to do that. And so,
j as they say, overything goes from bad
j to worse, aaA so, as everybody else
knurs, tho corpas is going from worse
to worst?and still thry du nothing.

We know that tho dead have claims
upon us (? and one of thorn' is to bo
buried decently, and in time). But the
living also have claims. And it is

ing, after the last offices have been duly

"TTe eratract the following from an is-?
sue of lire Barnwell Sentinel which ap
peared shortly after the discovery of the
Democratic Tammany frauds in Now
York City: '
"There is no use to attempt to dis
guise the fact, the one organisation is
just as corrupt as the other; honest Re
publicans aa Well as honest Democrats
see no escape from the fraud, corruption
and robbery now ruining the country, in
either party. Has not Boss Tweed
'with all his stealing * * * been
elected as a Democrat and as a candi
date of a Democratic organisation, *
* * * These are painful truths, but
they teach us a useful lesson if webe
wise enough to learn. They teach us
that a name so befouled as the name of I
Democracy has become, will not attract
honest Republicans, even though they
become convinced that their own party
is equally corrupt and degraded. Nay.
more: many men heretofore acting with
the Democratic organisation will not
lend their aid to keep it in power, can
not vote with an equally corrupt party,
and so keep from the polls altogether
* * * Where are the honest people
to go ? If they stay in the Democratic
party they know they will have to vote
for men devoid of patriotism and hon
esty. If they seek the Republican
party they find the same thieves and
scoundrels."
This language, coming from a Demo
cratic paper, is, so far as Democracy is
concerned, a clear case of confession in
open court?the highest evidence known
to the law upon which to base.a convic
tion. As applied to the Republicans it has
not the same force, for in that case it
amounts simply to an allegation, the
truth of which will be passed upon next
fall by a Grand Jury of the country at
largo.
We are perfectly willing, in this in
stance, to take the Democrats at their
own estimate, and, in every instance, to
accept the verdict of the whole poople
as to the merits or demerits of Republi
canism.
Meeting at Mouck's Corner.
A meeting was held at Monk's Cor
ner, in Charleston couuty, yesterdny.
The Hon. F. L. Cardoso, Secretary of]
State, beiug present, in councction with
the performance of his official dutes as
Land commissioner, eloqueutly addressed
the assemblage for nearly an hour,nt the
request of Mr. Stephen Brown, a prom
inent politician in the neighborhood,
who acted an Chairnan of the meeting.
Mr. Cardoso said to the people that
they had now enjoyed tho exercise of
political power for more than four years;
that thin power had brought to them in
numerable blessings, which they no doubt
highly appreciated; that they were now
on the eVe of a great political campaign,
which he believed, would have an im
portant influence on their whole future
condition in all its relations, political,
civil and social.
Mr. Cardoso earnestly entreated them
to exercise their power in the selection
of all national, State and couuty officers
in a manner that would redound to their
credit as good and honest citizens, worthy
of the high trusts committed to them.
He told the people that the eyes uf the
whole country were to a < ertaiu extent
turned towards thorn, to see if they had
the power aud wisdom of correcting any
abuses that may exist within their party;
that if they failed to do so, the intelli
gent and thoughtful peoplo of the oouo
try, who had bestowed these great bles
sings on them, would pronounoe thorn
unworthy of them, and the unwise oxer*
eise of their rights,and privileges would
most certainly react upon them.?Char

against a physician, for concealing a
small pox case.
Two hundred thousand Erie shares

The ExprcM expresses the suspicion
that yesterday's business was a feature
of a great pint of the Sickles combina
tion to make a colossal fortunes.
The newspaper correspondent has es
caped from tho North Carolina outlaws.
He reports the death of Henry Berry
Lowrey and Boss Strong.
Erie sold last night at the Fifth Av
enue Hotel at sixty-one and a half.
The Georgia Legislature' committee is
here to investigate tho conduct of the
absconding Governor Bullock. The* in
vestigation will include Bullock's tran
sactions with the State agent, and - the
proceedings will be private.
K. H. Grcon succeeds Jay Gould ij
the Erie directory. Krio is now hold at
66, but the demand is less active.
Transactions to-day were about a hun
dred thousand shares. The prices
ranged from 64 to 67}. Americans were
buyers. Europeans selling freely.

The Jamaica steamer Elba, from As
pinwall, Friday, reports the Virginias

war Tornado was entering the port when
the Elba left.

A slight earthquake was felt bore last
night, and also throughout the Stute ;

A Mexican Geucra!, John A. Cortina,
has been indicted in the Federal Court
for levying war agaiust the United

Col. Dudley's Letter.
The author is a gentleman of sterling
integrity, unsullied reputation as a lawyer
and citizen, and, for n long period of
years, has bcea a trusted leader of ihn
people in his portion of the State.
We could have wished that in declar
ing his adhesion to the principles of the
Republican party, he would have assum
ed higher ground than that which seems
to have been suggested to his miud by
the diotates of policy alone; "Howbcit
that was not first which is spiritual, but
that whioh is natural ami afterwards that
which is spiritual;" and, whether Col
oncl Dudley outers our rauks from the
muro plune of expediency, or steps upou
tho broad platform of the Republican
Party from the level of tho.?e who, dives
ted of passion and prejudice, have riscu
to a full comprehension of the faith that,

content to know that he is sincere in his

of the colored voters of this city, held at
Military Hall last evening, the*following
delegates were elected to atteud the
Colored Men's Convention to be held in
the City of Columbia on Friday, the

A Court Meld nv Mistake.?The
Circuit Court for York County com
menced its sittiugs last Tuesday, Judge
Thomas presiding. The grand jury re
ported only two true bills, one against
John Shaw and Robert McCorkle,
charged with assault and battery with
inteut to kill; and the other agarnst
Lawrence Withers and Andrew Bridges,
charged with larceny. Tho grand jury
whs discharged on Tuesday evening.
The ooly case taken up was that of the
Slate against Thomas Spencer and W.
P. Roddy, charged with the Iclonious
taking and carrying away nine bales of
ootton, the. property of \Y. B. Daniels,
in January, 1871. The bill of iudict
meut laid the offence iu two counts, one
for grand larceny the other for breach
of trust. S. P. Hamilton, Esq., ap
peared for the prosecution, Colonel Wr
li. Wilson for the defence. Tho jury
rendered a verdict of not guilty, and the
prisoners were discharged from custody.
After tho trial of this case the court
adjourned until the first Monday ;j
July next. This sudden and most un
expected termination of the session was
occasioucd by the discovery of a very
recent act of Assembly, changing the
time for holding court. Hereafter the
Circuit Court of York County will be
held rn tho first Monday in March,
July and November. The term just
ended was illegal, and its proceedings
are null and void.
New York Wealth, Taxation

of wealth, taxation and public indebted
ness, just completed, place the total
assessed value of the real estate in the
State of New York at 81.532,720,907,
and the assessed value of personal pro
perty 8434 280.278. The true valua
tion of nil real and personal estate in the
State is given at $6:500,841.264. The
total of taxation, exelusivo of national,
for the last year, was 848,388,027;
divided as state, $8,720,156; county
815,102,761, and town and city $24,
727,301. The true valuation of real
and personal estate in New York
County is placed as $3,480,268,700, or
more than half thai of the whole State.

The Cleveland Ledger says a gentle
