The County Republican Nominating
Convention met last Saturday pursuant
to call. Iu the chair Mr. George Boli
ver. Secretary, Mr. John L. Humbert.
Speeches were made by Messrs. Jami
son, Knowlton, Sturgeon, Mays and
others. The following gentlemen were
elected delegates to the State Nomina
ting Convention to be held in Colum
bia : Messrs. Jamison, Cain. Mays, Sas
portan and Byas.
The meeting passed off pleasantly and
the campaign was opened it* good style

The excitement over our last issue
was something never before equalled in
Oraugcburg. Our office was so crowded
by the time wo got to ptess that wc
?were compelled to call in the Sheriff
nnd a j>os.<c to make room for the prin
ters to work off the paper. Everybody
was clamorous for the "NEWS." Most
of the merchants loll their stores, in
haste to secure a copy, nnd their clerks
soon followed. The business part of the
town was deserted. Men, women ttud
children were congregated in a vast
crowd beneath our windows, screaming,
yelling, and hallooing at the top of their
voices for "Till News 1" Tue Nkws !"
A riot seemed imminent. Hundreds ol
copies were, immediately thrown to the
crowd, at vast expense to ourselves, but
with the noble iutcntion of allaying the
excitement nun saving it ;mau tiiu. 1
for every person supplied, a doton more
were immediately ou baud, equally ex
cited and vociferous. Our cditiou was
soou exhausted. Our stock of paper had
given out and no tuorc copies could be
printed. Then ensued a scene, the like
of which we shall-henceforth pre
vent by a larger edition. It beggars
descriptiou. At least a hundred e ise.
of assault and battery occurred. Some
of the Grst citizens in the place, who had
been fortunate in securing papers, were
knocked dowu und robbed of them
But on getting up, weak and wounded
as they wore, they went back to the
News OtTtco to try again, before going
homo to their families. The wholo town
was iunn uproar until midnight. So
individuals who had secured several
eopiox of the News disposed of thorn
readily at from 81.00 to $10,00 per copy.

go bail fur them all, and pay all the ex
penses,?since it was the cum;e, though
innocently, of all the trouble. As its
circulation aud advertising have in
creased immcuscly, it can afford to do
so.
