Carrying on its face, as a weekly

furnishing the ofiicial notices of sales,

jrould wish to establish more than a
business intercourse with its readers.
Going.to the hundreds of homes it visits,
wo would have the News a frieud, a
welcome frieud. Bearing words of interest,
of sympathy, of companionship, the Or
anoebtjug News would be treated not
as a necessity, nor yet as a conveniei.ee,
''but as a welcome old friend, whose
familiar face, would bear only cxpres
sions of good will nnd whose columns

Iii cur last report the cases of Dr.
Whites ides and Copt. Mitchell were
mentioned as having commenced. These
trials have been continued and resulted
on Saturday, December 2l{d, in the
conviction of both prisoners.
The charge upon which the jury pro
nounced their verdict of "Guilty" was
that of general conspiracy to hinder
aud prevent divers male citizens ' f
African extraction from tho freo exer
cise of tho Heaven born right of suf
frage.
The counsel moved for a new trial
and in arrest of judgment, Messrs. Stan
berry and Johnson went to Washington
to carry the case to the Supreme Court,
whore the question of the jurisdiction
of the United States Court over domes
tic criiiios punishable by State laws,
will be argued iu due time.
The next case was that of Uta United
Stales vs Samuel 0. Brown and John
Miller for conspiracy. The Drat nnmqd
l> load cd guilty and Miller went to trial
on his ploa of not guilty.
This case has ocoupiod the Court
during week before last and was con
cluded on Thursday, 28th December.
Tho prisoner was convicted. On
Thursday 28th, sentences wcro passed
upon tho prisoners hitherto convioted
as follows :
Sberrod Cbilders, $100 fine aud
eighteen months imprisonment, William
Montgomery, Bamc scntonce, Evans
Murphy and ilczckiah Porter, the Bamo.
Robert Hayes Mitchell, the next
prisoner, stated iu his own behalf that
be had uever engaged in any raids,
except tho ono when they went to Mc
Coimellsville for tho guns, and ou which
Jim Williams was bung, and the little
ride nrouud when they mado Charley
Russell dance. That be knew nothing
of tho intention to hang Jitn Williams
or injure any ouc, and was not with the
party that did the banging.
The sentence of the Court in this case
was delivered by Judge Bryan, who
paid :
Mr. Mitchell, it has been your un
bappincss to have been connected with
a great crime; and if the court could
I believe that you were a party to that
ci iino?that yon had suspected the ter
riblc deed that was to be done?and
had any intimation that you had coun
tenanced it, they wouhl exhaust the full
penalty of the law, and then it would
consider that you had been very merci
fully doalt with. But you have come
iu and confessed, and your manner lias
impressed the court that, although you
had been so misguided ns to join a body
of men to punish people, and punish
tlicm without responsibility to the luw,
yet wo feel at liberty to believe that you
have dealt, candidly with the court and
that you have told the truth; and it is
upon that conviction alone that the court
finds itj vindication for accepting your
declaration and believing that you were
in no way a party to it. The sentence
of the court is that you be imprisoued
eighteen months and fined ?100.
Capt. ?John W. Mitchell was the next
prisoner called. He stated that be

on account of the prisoner's ago and in

Klan as chief, and of bis failure to re
strain those who wero greatly under bis

Dr. Thomas B. Whitesides, was next
sentenced to one years imprisonment
and $100 fine.
John S. Miller, was sentenced to three
months impiisooment and $20 fine.
Sylvuuus Shearer, Hugh Shearer,
William Shearer, were, share and share
alike, sentenced toSlOO fine and eigh
teen months imprisonment.
On Friday 20th ult . Henry C. War
lick, Miles Carroll, Eli Ross Stuart.
Joeiab Martin aud Samuel (i. Brown
pleaded guilty and wcro sen to need to
eighteen months imprisonment and 8109
fine.
Dr. Edward T. A very was then put up
on bis trial. This trial has continued du
ring the past two weeks and resulted
in bis conviction.
During the continuance of the (rial
in this case, the prisoner Dr. Aver}',
was reported to have left. His bond for
three thousand dollars WPS however i-nnd
Judge Bond asked Col. MoM aster,
counsel for the prosecution, where ha
was. To this Col. il/cMastcr refused to
reply. Upon this tho court ordered a
rule to issue against him to show cause
why bis name should not. be stricken
from the roll of Attorneys. Col. Mc
Master replied to the rule by Mr. Fick
ling, and tho court reserved its decis
ion.
A revenue assessor in Ohio, asking
the u-iial questions, inquired.
?'Did yur wife have any income last
year ?"
"Yes, sir," replied the assessed ''.both
girls."

Brutal Murder.
One- of tbo most heartless and cold
blooded murders which wo havo ever
beon called upon to reoord was commit
ted about ono milo from Black rille on
Saturday before Christmas. An inof
feosivo old colored man named Adam
Jackson, employed on the plantation of
Mr. Hayward Brown, who resides about
eight miles from Blaokvillc, was on his
way to the latter place, in company with
his son. in charge of u load of cotton,
the old man walking beide the wagon
and the son driving. Wheu about one
mile from town they met a wagon con
taining five -.vhito men, who, we have
since learned, wore on their way to Or
angeburg to spend the Christmas. The
old ruati politely lifted his hat to the
party, and wished th-mi a merry Christ
mas. Without any other provocation
ono. of the party, a white man by tho
name of VA\ Chavis, who, wo learn, is
front Kdgcfield county, jumped from his
wagon, and making a terrible lunge at
Adam, p tinged the knife into bis heart
cutting it in half. lie made no attempt
to injure the boy, but getting back into
the wagon with bis companions, started
off. As soon as the son saw the terrible
deed which had been dune, be took one
of the mules from his wagon, and rode
as rapidly us pocsiblq to Bluchville, and
and fortunately found Mr. Brown, and
informed him of the tragedy, and he
and his brother Piuckncy and Mr. Sam
Graham at once started in pursuit. After
a chase of some ten or twelve miles they
overtook and captured the whole five,
bringing them back to Blaokvillc and
delivering them over to the authorities.
The murdered man was formerly owued
by Mr. James Brown, of Bamwell,
father of tho gentlemen in whose em
ploy bo wns at tho time of tho occur
rence, and bore a good character all bis
life. lie was over sixty years of age.
Chnvis is now in jail.
We failed to state above that the four
men in company with Chavis, at the
preliminary examination, were bailed to
nppoar at the next term of court, no ev
idence being adduced to implicate them
