The Legislature.
The Legislature of South Carolina
met nt Columbia ?n Tuesday last. Great
nod pressing duties nro befuro it,
to be met ; gflKc questions to bo dc
cideu in which tho people of the Statu
nre deeply interested. AH of the Cir
cuit Judges are to be elected, and men
of ability must be chosen to fill these
high positions.
Tho Governor's Message was read on
Wednesday. This document is lengthy
and embraces the numerous subjects of
the Exccutivo duties. AYc postpone a
syuopsis and review of it until our next.
The House hns passed a resolution
that looks towards retrenchment. A
committee of one member from each
county has been elected on nppoialments
of clerks, attaches, etc. This appears to
he a move in the rMit direction.
The Ku Klux Trials.
The trial of the Ku Klux prisoners in
Columbia commcuccd on Monday last iu
the United States Court, Judges Bond
and Bryan on the bench. District At
toracy Corbin and Attorney-General
Chamberlain repesent the prosecution.
Messrs. Stauberry and It e v e r#d y
Johason arc tho leading Coun
sel for the defence of the prisoners, for
whom a large fee is to be raised by the
different portions of the State. There
seem to be some technical difficulties as
to the juvy. Mr. Corbiu has objected to
tho jury, and the question was argued
by him and Mr. Johnson. Judge Bond
'adjourned the Court iu order ^o consult
over the question. These tmls will be
of great iutcrcst and we shall endeavor
to keep our readers informed as to their
progress.

previous to the tinio nt which the penalty
attaches, accompanied by affidavits that re
turns from crops bad not been received;
such petitions will be considered.
The pttblic will, therefore, place no reli
ance upon the report refcrrid to, as I am1
assured by bis Excellency that no exten
sions of time, other than those mentioned*,
will l?e grunted.
The collection of taxes for this fiscal year'
will commence on tho 20th instant, and con
tinue until the 15th of January next; after
which time, the penalties proscribed by law
will attnch: and bo strictly enforced.
