The Legislature of South Carolina
met at Columbia On Tuesday last. Great
nnd pressing duties are before it,
to be met ; g#vc questions to be de
cided in which the people of the State
nrc deeply interested. All of the Cir
cuit Judges arc to bo elected, nnd men
of ability must be chosen to fill these
high posilious.
Tbc Governor's Message was read on
"Wednesday. This document is lengthy
nnd embraces the numerous subjects of |
the Executive duties. We postpoue a
synopsis and ravicw of it until our next.
The House has passed a resolution
that looks towards retrenchment. A
committee of one member from each
county has been elected on appointments
of clerks, attaches, etc. Thit appears to
be a move in the right direction.
The Ku Klux Trials.
The trial of the Ku Klux prisoners in
Columbia commenced on Monday last in
the United States Court, Judges llond
and Bryan on the bench. District At
torney Corbin and Attorney-General
Chamberlain repescut the prosecution.
Messrs. Stanborry and It c v e r#d y
Johnson arc the leading Coun
sel for the defence of the prisoners, for
whom a large fee is to bo raised by the
different portions of the State. There
seem to be sotno technical difficulties tw
to tho jury. Mr. Corbin has objected to
the jury, and the question was argued
by him and Mr. Johnson. Judge Boud
'adjourucd the Court iu order^o consult
over the question. These tlmils will be
of great iutcrcst aud we shall endeavor
to keep our readers informed as to their
progress.

Charleston.?Charleston is fast be
coming a manufacturing as well as ?o

Persons desiring to nvnil themselves of
tlic benefits of this promise will be required
to tile a petition with the Couuty Auditor
previous to the time nt which the penalty
attaches, accompanied by affidavits that re
turns from crops had not been received;
such petitions will be considered.
The pttblic will, therefore, place no reli
ance upon the report referrid to, as I am'
assured by his Excellency that no exten
sions of timc, other than those mentioned,
will be granted.
The collect'rn of taxes for this fiscal year'
will commence on the 20th instant, and con
tinue until the i'tth of January next; nftur
which time, the penalties proscribed by law
will attach, und be strictly enforced.
County Treasurers will proceed at once to-*
taxes for previous years.
