.;. The city of Chicago, often called the
"Queen of tho West," is now a heap of
mouldering ruins,. Perhaps no city on
the American contiuent was so devoid
of a high-toned society, and so. given to
immorality as the once proud city of
Chicago. The character of its peoplo,
if we are to judge from the the popular
verdict, was very loose, and possessed
Be-one trait to commend it to the respect
and eoo&deoca of an enlightened publio
sentiment. Men and women there wean
truly actors and actresses on one vast
stage of profligacy and extravagance;
Religion was a mockery with them, and
every inst'netof morality was tost in tho
great whirlpool of social recklessness
and turpitude; it was a modern Sodom
and Gomorrah, and truly it has- met the;[
Site of its ancient prototype.
Tho magnitude of the evils which af-'

estimated until the full measuse of its

human can tell the utter absence of mor

the whole truth is known. We hare

gations, was no moro regarded in Chi?

brute, or the wild sobs of a caged lioness.
The mea were, almost without exception,
a mass of libertines, and the women in
the same proportion, a bevy of fashion
able jpeows, whose careers were as furious
. 'and flimsy as the pc&oleuses of Paris.
There were good men and women in
Chicago; but their examples and influ
nances amounted to nothing. They
.leould no more arrest the mad tide of
fashion and rejt?cssness, than a pop
gun coald batter down the Chinese wall;
they were merely the few stars that

terrible that its blackness makes the

chastity was a base mockery, and the
