mouldering ruins., Perhaps no city on
the American contincut was so devoid
of a high-toned society, and so.given to
immorality as the once proud city of
Chicago. The character of its people,
if we are to judge from the the popular
, verdict, was very loose, and possessed
as-one trait to commend it to the respect
and confidence of an enlightened publio
sentiment. Men and women there wore
truly actors and actresses on ono vast
stage of profligacy and extravagance.
' Religion was a mockery with them, and
every instmctof morality was tost iu tho
great whirlpool of social recklessness
and turpitude; it was a modern Sodom
and Gomorrah, and. truly it im* mat the:
, 5kie of its ancient prototype.
Tho magnitude of the evils which af
j flicted that city, can never be. properly
estimated until tho fall measuso of its
wickedness is brought to light* and no

a mass of libertines, and the women in
the same proportion, a bevy of fashion
able peons, whose careers were as furious
and flimsy as the pctrolemes of Paris. X
There were good men and women in \
Chicago; but their examples and influ
wences amounted to nothing. They

fashion and resdicssness, than a pop
