In your issue of tho 29th of Soptom
bor, I notice the following paragraph :?
"Comm BNDAHi.K?\\e understand
that Solicitor Scubrook, attended by tho
forciuan of tho Grand Jury, iu order to
satisfy freely the miuds of all parties,
has applied to several frionds of Demo
cratic lawyers in this town to join, him
in the prosecution of tho cases against
ccrtuin County officials, which will be
tried at the next court. It is under
stood that t hey ull declined."
For the sake of truth, I deem it my
duty, as Foreman of the Grand Jury, to
state, that Mr. Scubrook and myself, in
company, applied to only two law firms
in Orangeburg to join iu the prosecution
of the County cases.

A correspondent of the Boston Trave
ler records the following:
A bright little boy about four years of
age, sou of n clergymau, was at your
correspondent's house one eveuing with
his paruut, and 1 gave him a couple uf
live cent pieces, lie laid them on the
table, nnd putting his finger ou ono
said : ''This one I am going to give
to the heathen, aud the other I am
goiug to keep myseli." He played with
them awhile, till one of them rolled
away aud he could not find it. ''Well,

A Sardine Supper. -A country
landlord wishing to give an elcgnnt en.
tertaiutnent at his house, sent to a neigh
boring city for two dozen boxes of sar
dines, which he was informed was the
chief delicacy in tho chief delicacy in
the market. His clwrography, bowevor,
was so so bad us to make tho order read,
'two dozen boxes syringes.' The night
uf the party came, nnd, as supper time
drew m ar. the landlord looked anxiously
dowu the street ?>r the appearance of
?the stago which was to bring tho princi
pal dish on the bill. At last it arrived
and with it a package for the expectant
landlord. Directly thcro was a great
outcry, and n sound of crushing in the

stood Brown, puffing nnd blowing with
rago. 'See there I 1 sent for two dozen
boxes of sardiues for tho supper to-night,
