What Ten Dollars cnn Do.
Geo. W. Williams of Charleston is
making a tour through Europe, nnd is
contributing n series of letters, descrip
tive of bis travels, to the Charleston
Courier. From ouo of bis recent lettors
wo take the following extract. It shows
what a man can do with but a small sum
of uionej if the proper use is made of
it:
"A long pilgrimage?yes, iudced,
thirty years is a long time for any ono
jte\bc; occupied in making a journey.
**** '-To-day wc saw a friend of ours, who,
some thirty years ago, left his houto in
tborjnojiqtaiiia ol a- Southern State for
Itafy. a The grand oil cities of Venice,
Florence, Rome, and Naples wcro the
dream of his childhood, nnd he resolved
on seeing them; but how was tins long
journey to be mado by a mountain boy,
with ouly ten dollars iu bis pocket'{ Our
young friend believod that where there
isn will there is a wuy, and that almost
anything is> possible for man to accom
plish by pcrscvcr.tnco nnd well- itooted
energy. He knew that Italy was far,
but he did not stop to couut tho cost,
. or to grow'weary, before he encountered
tho fatigues of tho journey; neither did
lions by the roadside frighten him.
Whoa ho started on his long and per
flousjourney, there wore but four miles
of railway ut the South. Had there
? beon a thousand they would have been
of no avail to him. He however did
,1 the next best thing, for ono determined
with ten dollars to see Italy He begun
bis jouruey on his two strong feet, nnd
to lesscu bis expenses li3 made a bargain
with a kiud-hcartcd man who was going
with his wagon and team one huudrcd
and fifty miles on the road to Italy. The
boy was to ussist the old man in cooking
curryiug, nnd*-seotching, lor his board.
The fare, of course, was plain, and the
lodgings at night on tho ground; but
this out door lifo developed Hid f'sclc
if tiot the brain of tho youth, a \ ?vas
an important training, and hardens one
who had to cross the Atlantic and climb
the Alps before he could look upon the
blue .skies of Italy. One hundred and
filty miles of the journey was performed
at u cost of twenty-five cuts !
It. will bo seen that our friend's orig
inal capital was nearly whole when he
accomplished this much ol his journey.
He was now among .strangers, and Could
not proceed further until his means were
increased. Eut Italy he was determin
ed to sec; he therefore went to work a' a
salary of fifty dollars per annum. This
was indeed a microscopic view of the
Italien skies, and tinder difficulties. It
