What Ten Dollars can Do. Oeo. \Y. "Williams of Chnrloston is making a tour through Europe, and is contributing a series of letters, descrip tive of his travel*, to the Charleston Courier. From one of his recent lettors wo take the following oxtruct. It shows what u man can do wit h hut a small sum of moncj if the proper uso is made of it: "A long pilgrimage?yes, indeed, thirty years is a long time for any ono ta.bc occupied in making a journey, T/O-dny we saw a frichd of ours, who, some thirty years ago, left his homo in thorjpu^pqtaius. ol a Southern State'for Itaty. "*" The" grand old cities of Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples wcro the dream of his childhood, and he resolved on seeing them; but how was this long journey to be mado by a mountain hoy, with. on.Iyvten dollars in his pocket'{ Our young friend believed that where there is a will there is n way, and that almost anything is possible for muu to accom plish by perseverance and well directed energy. He know that Italy was fur, hut he did nut stop to couut the cost, or to grow weary, before he encountered the fatigues of tho journey; neither did lions by the roadside frighten him. Whoa he started on his long and per flous journey, there wore but lour miles ut railway ut iho South. Had there bcon a thousand they would have been of no avail to him. He however did the next best thing, for one determined with ten dollars to see Italy. He. began his journey on his two strong feet, and to lessen his expenses I13 made a bargain with a kiud-licnrtcd man who was going with his wagon 'ami team one hundred and .fifty miles on the road to Italy.-The hoy was to assist the old man in cooking) currying, nnd scotching, for his board. The furc, of course, was plain, and the lodgings at night on tho ground; hut Urfs out door life devclopod thj muscle if not the brain of the youth, and was au important training, and hardens one who had to cross the Atlantic and climb the Alps before he could look upon the blue skies ol" Italy. One hundred and fifty miles of the journey was performed at a cost of twenty-five cuts ! It will be seen that our friend's orig inal capital was nearly whole when he accomplished this much ol his journey. He was now among strangers, and could not proceed further until his means were iucreased. Rut Italy he was determin ed to sec; he therefore went to work at a salary of lifty dollars per auutim. This was iudced a microscopic view of the Italien skies, and under difficulties.
