Sanguinary Encounter with a
Wild Cat
At 10 o'clock A. M., on August 11,
? dog belonging to one John Feltor, ft |
wood chopper, in Pine Hill, N. Y , was
heard barking in the mountains some
distance from the house. Mr. Felter's
little son, twelve years old, knowing by
the bark of the dog that stone important
game was on foot, set out for the moun
tains. His mother felt a little anxious
after the boy had gone, and for some
time listened to the barking of the dog.
After half an hour the barking ceased;
and, as hour after hour passed away and
tho boy did not make his appearance,
the mother set out to go to ono of the
neighbors to securo their help in a
search for tho boy. On tho road she
met her husband returning from the
village, where ho bad that
morning been attending to somo busi
ness. He listened to his wife's story,
and trying to calm her fears, went baok
with her to the house, and taking his
gun started toward the plaoo indicated
by his wife. Mr. Felter traveled about
throught the mountains until late in the
afternoon, hearing nothing, and was
about to return home when ho almost
stumbled over the dead carcass of a wild
cat. It was a very largo msle. Every
thing indicated a terrible conflict. The
spectacle gave Mr. Fcltcr nn apprehen
sion that some terrible thiug bad hap
pened to his boy. Examining the leaves
and underbush, he had little difficulty
in finding a trail of blood, and this he
followed nearly a hundred yards. Then
ho came upon tho dog standing over the
body of his son, who was prostrate on
the ground. Tho dog was earnestly
looking at tho boy, and occasionally
licking his faco and hands. On Mr.
Felter's approach, ho gave a loud bark
and pranced about with joy. Tbc father
knelt by the side of his son and placed
his hand by tho side of his sou and plae
ed his hand over the he*rt. With joy
nnspeakablo ho fouud tho little fellow
alive, but terribly wounded, as it appear
ed, by the claws of the wild-cat. The
little fellow's clothes were almost torn
to shreds, and his flesh was terribly lac
erated from head to foot. He was suf
fering from loss of blood, but his wounds
hod been handsomely dressed by the
faithful dog, which had for hours been
standing by him, licking them. Taking
his boy in his arms, tho futher made
his way to his home, followed by tho
ever faithful dog. After reachirg his
house, restoratives being adiuiuistercd,
tho boy was able to tell his story. 11c
came, upon the wildcat, and Boeing his
catship held tho dog at bay, having'uu
advantageous position, ho attompted to
dislodge him, first with stoucs; but these
the beast did not seem to mind. Thou
he got a pole and attempted to poke him
out. At this tho wildcat bocamt eu
raged nnd springing upon the boy,
scratched and tore his flesh as above
related. At this the dog dashed at the
cat and soon dispatched it. Tho boy
Attempted to go home, but sank to tho
ground ex.. lusted. The fellow is doing
well. The good nursing as the dog has
done much toward allaying tho inflama
tion; tho licking r,f his wounds by tho
faithful animal has undoubtedly saved
jfoe txy'o life.
A Valid Excuse.?The amusing
little incident here related actually took
place in a court-room in one of the
Southwestern States less than a century
Enter juror (who had detained the
court nt least an hour.)
Judge ( nuch irritated)?Mr. Clerk,

Sheriff handed the note to tbe Judge.
Tho judicial frown instantly gavo place
to a most benevolent aud satisfactory
smile, as his Honor stammers :
"Ah?yes!?certainly?yes?valid ex
