Sanguinary Encounter with a| mid Cat At 10 o'clock A. M., on August 11, a dog belonging to one John Feltor, a ?woodchopper, in Pino Hill, N. Y , wa? heard barking iu the mountains some distance from the house. Mr. Felter's little son, twelve years old, knowing by the bark of the dog that sKxne important game was on foot, set out for the moun tains. His mother felt & little anxious after the boy had gone, and for some time listened to the barking of the dog. After half an hour the barking oeased; and, as hour after hour passed away and tho boy did not make his appearance, the mother set out to go to ono of the neighbors to securo thoir help in a search for tho boy. On tho road sho met her husband returning from the village, where ho had that morning been attending to some busi ness. Ho listened to his wife's story, and trying to calm her fears, went back with her to She house, and taking his gun started toward tho plaoo indicated by his wife. Mr. Felter traveled about throoght the mountains until late in the afternoon, hearing nothing, and was about to return home whon ho almost stumbled over the dead oarcasa of a wild cat. It was a very large male. Every thing indicated a terrible conflict. The spectacle gave Mr. Fcltcr an apprehen sion that some terrible thing had hap pened to his boy. Examining the leaves and underbush, he had little difficulty in finding a trail of blood, and this he followed nearly a hundred yards. Then ho came up.' 1 tho dog standing over the body of his son, who was prostrate on the ground. Tho dog was earnestly looking at tho boy, and occasionally licking his faco and hands. On Mr. Felter's approach, he gave a loud bark and pranced about with joy- The fathor knelt by the side of his son and placed his hand by tho side of his so j and plao ed his hand over the he-rt. With joy unspeakablo he found tho little fellow alive, but terribly wounded, as it appear ed, by the claws of the wild-cat. The little fellow's etothes rere almost torn to shreds, and his flesh was terribly lac erated from head to foot. Ho was suf fering from loss of blood, but his wounds had been handsomely dressed by the faithful dog, which had for hours been standing by him, licking them. Taking his boy iu his arms, tho father made his way to his home, followed by tho ever faithful dog. After reachirg Iub house, restoratives being adiuiuistercd, the boy was able to tell his story. He came upou the wildcat, aud seeing his catahip held tho dog at bay, having'au advantageous position, ho nttomptcd to dislodge him, first with stoues; but these u the beast did not seem to mind. Thon he got a polo aud attempted to poke him out. At this the wildcat became eu raged and springing upon the boy, scratched and tore his flesh as above related. At this the dog dashed at the cat and Soon dispatched it. The boy nttemptcd to go home, but sank to tho ground exhausted. The fellow is doing well. The good nursing as the dog has dono much toward allaying tho inflama tion; tho licking of his wounds by tho faithful animal has undoubtedly paved flfe tVy's life. A Valid Excuse.?Tho amusing little incident here related actually took place in a court-room in one of the ? Southwestern States less than a century ,?6? : Enter juror (who had detained the court at least an hour.) Judge (iiuch irritated)?Mr. Clerk, enter a fine of twenty five dollars against Mr. Smith. t Smith?Did I understand your Honor to fine me twenty-five dollars ? Judge?Yes, air. Smith draws his pencil and addresses the following note to his Ilouor: "Dear Judge : That littlo difference - ?.U?tU??'t.* i:??t- ,? 'draw' amounted to just 'fifty.' Pay the Clerk that 'twenty-five,' aud hand the balance to the Sheriff. Y'ours, otc. Smith." 8heriff handed tho note to the Judge. The judicial frown iustantly gave place to a most benevolent aud satisfactory smile, as his Honor stammers : "Ah?yes!?certainly?yes?valid ex cuse !?certainly !?valid excuse?cer tainly ! The Clerk will remit Mr. Smith's fine." [Did we ever have a Judge on our Circuit who might havo been caught likewise had he fined certain ones ?] "You are very stupid, Thomas," said A country teacher to a little boy eight years old. "You are a little donaey ; and what do they do to cure them of stupidi ty ?" "They feed them better and lick them less,' said the arch little urchin. "A man who would maliciously set fire to a barn," said good old Elder Por son, "and burn up a stable full of hor ses and cows, ought to be kicked to ileath by a jackass, and I'd like to be the one to do it." Jit it Ordained by tbe Mayor and Aldermen in Counell aaaembled that, on and after the First day September 1871, any Person or Persona found hitching or tying their Stock, suoh as HORSES, MULES set., to any of the TREBS in the Publio Street of the Town of Orangeburg, S. C, ?hall be subjected to a fins of five (5) dollara for each and every offenes ; half of the fines collected to be paid to the Informer when bringing with him sufficient proof to eonviet. Sao. 2. That a fine of five (5) dollars be Imposed upon any oats who shall ride their Horse, Mule etc, on the SIDE-WALKS of ?aid Town; or caused to have BITCHED, of TIED, their Stock, auch as Horses, Mules etc., so as to offer an obstruction or obstacle to the free passage of Citizens on the side walk. That any Home, Mule etc., found running at large in the Publio Streets of said Town, shall be taken into custody by the Town Marshal, and lodged for safe keeping till the owner oome forward and prove property and pay into the Treasurer or the Town Council five (?) dollars for each and every head of Stock so confined.
