farmors arc beginning to understand that
it is worse than lolly to buy provisions
which havo been paying ficights and
profits all the way from Illinois aud In
diana, when they can bo made in profu
sion r.t their own doors at a saving of at
least fifty per cent. Let tho farmer
make what he needs ic support his fami
ly and stock before he thinks of any
thing else, for ouly then can lu main
tain that independence without which
the tiller of tho soil is a miserable
drudge rather than a free man. A sup
port secured, he may then plant in good
conscience and with sanguine hoj.es,
thoso crops which have such a charm for
the speculative nature of man. Wo are
also glad to note the continued activo
demand aud steady high price for our
great staple. If the harvested crop but
realizes tho prices ruling at prcaeut
Orangoburg will be a happy County

some new evidence of its iocroosing pros
perity and wo are disposed to think we
have fair grounds for our belief that

burg will be second iii importance to no

lumbia. Indeed, tho growth of the
Town exceeds its ubility to supply houset

as might bo expected from sucb a con
dition of things. This offers an induce
ment for the investment of Cupsti?l which,
can not long remain unimproved. In

?Tudgo Andrews will soon erect several
comfortable and plousant cottages on tho
ground now occupied by YVhittemoro's
soap factory. ' Tin?, wo nrd conficlcut,
will be but the beginning of a serie^ of
improvements in real property which
will render Orangeburg ono cf the most
desirable towns in" thu State.

does with n vim, a life, mid an, energy,
worthy of nil praise. It has the most
enterprising, active, aud intelligent Fire
Department we ever saw in nn inland
town. It has lurgo and well stocked
i stores, conducted by iucn who understand 1
their business thoroughly. Its uew
Bank is in a flourishing condition^ Its
new hotel is conducted by one of the
best of hosts and the very'best of luis

Its climate is healthy, its society
is refined aud agreeable, it is within
easy vcach roach of both the political
and commercial capitals of the State,
and, altogether, wo know of no other
