Sacked Concert.?It will bo seen

another column, that a Sacred Concert
is to be given at the Presbyterian
Church on Thursday evening, 20th iust.
This will be a splendid opportunity to
hear the new organ recently erected in
aaid Church, and we predict a full and
appreciative audience for tho occasion.
Tho Orgau is approved and pronouueed
of very fino toue by the musical commu
nity at large. As there will bo no en
cores in tho Church, the Concert will
be shorter than the oue recently given at
Stookor's Hall. Wo understand that
tho celebrated cborus, "The Heavens
are telling" from the Oratorio of "Tho
Creation," and portions of Mi thud's
Mass will be rendered, either of which
will bo fully worth the prioe of admis
sion, aud leave those who may attend
both edified and. instructed.
The object of this Concert should com
mend itself strongly to our community,
as the proceeds will be applied to tho
purchase money of the Organ iu the
Presbyterian Chureh.

DER?On the 15?h iust, a most
diabolical attempt was made by a
young negro woman to kill the wife
of a gentleman residing in the vi
ciutty of Brauchvillc, whoso name, for
delicate reasons, wc forbear to mention. !
It uppcars that ou the morning of the
day above named, Mr. -, wcut
into his field as usual, to watch and over
see the bunds iu his emplnymcut. While
in the field, this uogro woman (who was
also an employee of his) left her work,
aud went to his house. Here sho en
tered the house, with an uxe in hand,
uud commeuccd her hellish deed of
blood. The poor defenceless aud inno
cent young wife was too weak to defend
herself, and of course could do nothing
but stand still aud receive the chops
and blows which sho thought would
8000 terminate her existence here. We
arc informed that before this fiend of
hull could complete ber work upon this
unfortunate young wife, tho noise of
a wagon or some other vehicle pas
sing, occasioned her to desist for a mo
ment, through fear of being detected.
Although appitrcntly devoid of even the
sympathizing instincts of a brute, this
would-be murder?s8 of a helpless aud
innocent woman, seemed in this short
interval, to hive been struck with re
morse of conscience. Her spirit of hull
deserted her, and she could uot find
courage to further lacerate and beat the
pc-.tr binding, agonizing piece of suffer
ing humauity ihat iuy before her;
and told ber that she would spare
her life if, sho, Mrs. Mr.-'s
wife, would promise not to tell him who
committed the deed.
The negro womau then roturucd to
the field, and resumed h'er work. The
COnditiou of Mrs- was discovered
by somo one ou tho place, who im
mediately communicated tho intelligence
to hor hu.-band. When he got to her
side, he found her lying upon the bed
weltering in hor blood. Of courso it
eamc like a clap of thunder upon him,
and had be not becu made to feel that
it was indeed a terrible reality, from
tho groans and blood that emanated
from her whom he had left a few mo
ments ago, healthy, and happy, lie weuld
have doubted his own senses. Tho only
thing that surprises us is that he did
not mako short work of the life of the
oue Who did tho deed.

But perhaps his forbearance was a
bettor virtua.if not in the eyes of hu
manity, in thoso of Heaven.
At this writing, we are informed that j
Mrs. '?-ia still iiri?g, bat in an
exceedingly critical cendtion.
The negro woman was arrrosted and is
now in Jail, where we trust she will
remain until the sentence of an outrag
ed law is passed upon her, end she J
'oaves it to expiate her crime.
