Toasts, Sentiments, Songs, M?sle, etc., etc. The prise that was contested for on the afternoon of the 28th ultimo, be fcho " Young Americas" and the fSfaott Hook and Ladders," is two iresh in the minds of onr readers for it to be necessary to explain the reason whj the Engine Hall was lighted up so brilliantly on Monday night last. It will bo remembered that the "Young ( America Fire Engine Company," won too Ttetory. Well, of course their prize had to bo presented to them in a proper manner, and hcuce the coming together of happy hearts on Monday At about 8i o'oiock the Hall was crowded. Among tho invited guests who were present, outsido of the Fire Department, were Dr. Charles R. Taber Jttttna Glo7er, Ksq , and tho editor of tho ORAsoEMunK News. Amidst the happy voices and tones of merriment that resounded throughout the Engine House, Mr. J. W. Moscley, President of tho "Young Americas," rapped his gavel upon the table, aud brought the jubilant throng to order. He here stated the object of the meet - a ing m a beautiful and concise address. .;Hf Wat; glad to see the two Companies meet together iu such a generous sprit, and hoped that the feeling of brotherly love and rivalry that had marked the contest from the beginning, and as ex hibited in all their intercourse with eaeh other, would continue to character ize the history of the two Companies. Bidding the Elliotts, and the other guests who were present, a happy aud henrty welcome, Mr. Moscly resumed his seat amidst applauso and shouts ofj joviality, by introducing the vcnerablo aad m?ch loved Chief of our Fire Dc ?^j JJJ i%it ii.Uv.., tu? j...?~? speech. The prize awarded was a beautiful and large Firemen's pioturo. - Dr. Elliott's speech, in presenting it, ^Was graceful aud dignified, and did honor to the occasion. He did not Itnow why it wss that he was selected fe?ir V . for that purpose unless on account of ? 'I his age, end becauso ho seemed as a father to the'boys. When tho challenge o scut from the "Young Americas" to the "Elliotts" ha ftad foars that it would be a bone of contention, and that unfriendly feelings would ensue. The venerable old Chief was peculiarly touching in hin remarks -when he spoke of hi? loa^ ccnn?'.'*i'>n with the Fire Departtneut, and hit feelings and relation! to it. "Seeing yon all together, in aueh a spirit of friendship," he continued, "re minds me of what the good old David said, *Uow street and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together lu Uni ty/ and how much hotter with such feel* ings yon can serve yourselves and the h," v ik.ti r.i ?:. ;t?J ii>i iitfr community. Here Dr. Elliott presented the prise, "not crowned with a gourd vine," said he, "but with tho best wishes of tho hearts of those from whom you won it." Andrew C. Assure them, sir, that this Pic ture will occupy a prominent place in our Hall, and whon wo mcot together hero wo shall look upon it as the trophy of our first victory?as tho emblem ot success?as an expression of the confi dence of our citizens in our efforts?and I as a remembrancer of the frieudly, but vigorous contest, of the 28th and 30th j days of Juno, 1871. Wo are the successful party, but we do not boast it in any meun spirit?and to night we welcome aa brethren those who were our competitors on the 28th and 30th days of Jnne last. ? After this came punch, lomonadc and .many other goods things. Then follow ed "wit from fluent lips," oud mirth, and laughter, and- raoro punch. Being in a remarkably good humor, and delighted at the happy scene, tho oc casion presented, we wrote ou tho edge of the paper upon which we wero taking notes the following impromptu stanza : Tho "Young Americas" tho "Elliotts" heat, And the prize to tbepi is given; The "Young Americas" the "Elliotts" treat, And that makes tbe whole thing even. President Moseley here rapped tho meeting to order again, when the follow ing toast was offered by Andrew C. Dib ble, Esq.: "To our Invited Guetts.?May we have many a friendly re-union." Crits of DoTreville! DcTrcvillc !! followed thi3 sentiment. Amidst tre mendous shouts that gentleman was pulled up by his frioods, and made one of those snccchcs so characteristic of himself. He Buid iu that serious style which he can affect so well, that tbe race between the "Young Americas" and the "El liotts," on the 28th of June, 1871, was an cvout that would long live iu tho history of Orangoburg. One year ago Franco threw doue the gauge of battlo to Prussia. The world Btood still. Moo, women, and children wondered what would be the result. An event so soul stirring never beforo had transpired. The struggle culminated in tho defeat of France, and since that lime no event had transpired that so moved ' Ya world, and tbe people of Orangeburg County especially, as the challenge from the "Young Americas" to tho "Elliotts." Merchants closed their stores, and talk ed nothing but Firemen und the Race. Mr. DeTreville continued for some time in his inimitably happy .?tyle, and closed by saying that as the war in Btt rags ws? over, and the much talked Of struggle between the "Young Americas" and the "Elliotts** had also pasted into i history, he hoped that afj&Ara would be come quieted once more, and that men would return to their avoOJ '?t'i . gain. "You whipped tts," sa\o to; "you won the prise, and We are Willing that jott should enjoy the Uurols thus achieved; but take care We don't win them back before many days shall pass, for We uvw't stay whipped." After the applause had subsided, which followed Mr. D's speech, the Press was toasted by Mr. Fenn, Sec retary of tho "Young AuierlcuV Mr. Meyera was called for, and re sponded iu sincere and earnest words. Wc eOvj them only in a spirit of brotherly emulation, and in any succeeding contest, would wish no brighter than tho se won by you on tho 28th. I offer -you "one minute and twer?y nine seconds." Mr. Edward Hubble offered tho follow ing to tho Hoard of Fire Masters : "The (Heers of th* Picture.?Our lasting gratitude to the noble exponents of public service." Other toasts and sentiments were given, which wc omitted to take down in the excitement aud joviality which prevailed towards the last of the enter tatnuient. We have uot forgottcu though the glorious song that Dr. Cbas. R. Tabor regaled the crowd with. Tho Doctor has cue of the best baritone voices we ever heard, and we long for another such occasion to trauapire that we may hear him agaiu. Mr. Rogers also contributed much to the fun aud enjoyment of tho night by siugiug that piece of his called?well, we can't think of it just now, but our friends will remember it. Rut the gay aud happy crowd were reminded that Monday w;\? gone, and tht> early hours of Tu morning weic bciug encroached lr?.?. So after taking some more punch, (we took Lern- j onsde, vide, Messrs Maul and Betterson) and listening to more music, the party began to oispenw. But long will lively recollections of its pleasures and enjoyments find happy echoes upon the chores and cliffs of memory. The genuine spirit of friend- j ship, and good feeling that existed be tween all parties ou this occasion, will always bo au event to which our mind will love to recur, when scenes not so happy, shall loom up before us. Acad emy by Dr. NY C. .Whetstone, who la brief address, stated the object of the meeting. After Wards speeches were made by Dr. O. Ik Ott, Kdwsrd Car roll, W. R. Reedich and J. Felder Meyers, Esqs., followed by a gentleman noted for his belief ia the Darwiniau ^theory. After a thorough discussion of iho subject it was Tvsolvcd that tho citi zens of Branchvilic were not opposed to a By stem of Freo "Schools, but were de cidedly oppotfil to the manner in whioh the School Fund?, ware ditburud and withhold from teachers. Of course this action on too part of the citizens of I Branchvillo Township, will result in a virtual suspension- of the Free Schools iu that community uutil 1873, unless the law ia amondod speedily. But oven as it stands, we question very seriously the legality of the action of the meeting at Brauchville on Saturday last, a mat ter which for want of spaee, we will leave to discuss Hfcsonio future issue. ?
