??The position of the local editor
is a hard one. He is expectod to know
everything but to publish only those
things that will bo palatable to polite
ears. If be soes and knows that Major

you could see yourselves as others see

you with disgust, horror and repug

yourselves to some remote part of this

--Orangeburg is a pleasant place
It has many things to boast of. Thore
rre no fairor specimens or tho tcodcf sex
under tho skies than arc to bo seen of |
evenings walking her strcete". She has
lefge ahady troes dotted nil alnmt over
hor face; first-class hotels ; fino livery
stnbles; nu accommodating poet master;
throo fire companies; a debating sooioty
in full blast; a temperance society to set
examples for the immoral and iutoutpe
irntc; somo.men noted for their virtues,'
and some noted for their fcoack at tell
ing all s.-jrts of tales, (stories), whilo a
small minority is distinguished all over
the County for their boroij propensities.
In short, a Jittlo good and a little bad,
a little wisdom and u little fools? upon
the whjle, imitorial ?afdi ileot for a Lord
Byron to inuke up a picture of '-hells in
training" from. We have the best
newspaper in tho County. But alter
having all these, it is becoming a serious
question whether or not it will do to live
in Orangcburg any longer. The fact of
It is, the fleas aud tho vory hot weather,
.ogcthcr with several other promioeot
misanccs, are so annoying that it is im
[possible to livo hero "in .pcice and good
will toward all." A mooting is therefore
to bp called some time next week for the
purpose of taking into consideration these
matters. Something must be done.
Thero's no living here as it is. We
irust uur citizens will bo governed with
prudnece in tho matter, and not act
hastily or rashly.
-Iu speaking of the i of the race
betwecu the "Young Americas," aud
tho "Elliott Hook aud Ladders," the
Charleston Courier tried to bo smart.
Because the former Company succeeded
iu bearing off tho palm, tho Courier
must needs stoop so low as to say its
Engiuc "deserved to be crowned with a
gourd wine." Now our contemporary,
when it got off that contempt nous fling
nt a respectable Company, no doubt
shook its mane nud laughed a broad,
bland, and hollow laugh, aud thought
that it could no longer be said that it was
sleepy and ante diluvian in its ideas, for
it had insulted a real live, and up to-tho
times, Fire Company. But our boys all
regard it in a different light. Th-y
think it a "departure" from honorable
journalism to ihn. attempt, without a
cause, to deliberately insult nearly a
hundred of our best citizens. Others,
who know more of the exrentric ami
quaint old Courier, fay?that it wr.a some
thing like the joy 1(0*a! kick at the linn.
Any how we think it was uncalled for.
aud we would suggest that the same
advice it gave a few d tjs ago to Horace
Crccly about his "young men," it would
profit by applying to its own?either
discharge them or school them into bet
ter ways. It would not do fur the f How
that penned that smart paragraph about
the "Young Americas" to visit Orange
burg. If ho did, we doubt if he would
be so fond of crowning things with
"gourd wines" thereafter.
-A few days ago we were regaled
with an extraordinary story about the
size, flutindcrlngs and awful nppearaucc
of a "slimy cel." Our informant said
that he was iu company with a gentle
man of Orangcburg, who while fi.-lnng
with an tingling line in a dead river not
tar from Town, got a bito and pulled
We wero informed that the boat the
party was in, was a large and steady af
fair ; that three men could sit ou one
edge of it aud it would no have turned
over ; but that this eel, this hideous eel
of huge dimensions, when hooked,
floundered and pulled so hard that at
one time the boat came near capsizing;
that in his runs he showed a small por
tion of his tail : that it was nine (!)
inches broad ! that another time while
making a tremendous surge to free him
self, he ran his bead out of the water
aud showed his teeth. Our informant
was a little excited as well as frightened
and did not notice them closely, but
would judge tho monster's tushes to
have been two or three inches in length,
and one inch aud a quarter broad. Af
ter floundering about for ucarly ten
minutes, and wearing out the arms of
tvro men, this extraordinary fish got
Iooko. What a pity. It is said he
would have weighed in the neighbor
hood of ouu buudred pounds. Old
fishermen tell us that tho largest they
ever saw was not heavier than 21 lbs
All ol the foregoing wiii bo certified to
before a Trial Justice if thcro ure any
disposed to throw cold water on it. It is
so, vidr. our informant.
-Tho Fourth of July was not cel
ebrated here with that pomp and glory
which always marked its advent in
unfc-beUum times. Of tho three Firo
pt?i^^^owy, only Odo, the Coui
Coinniot, was Out. They tried their speed
gniust the tinio | ruade by the Young
Anioricas, in the'race with the Elliotts,
but failed sadly io even approximate the
figures tnado by the latter Company.
In the afternoon We learn that the
Militia Company marched to the Court
House, whither the excentric and quaint
Joel delivered himself of an ungtara
matical harrangue.
Outsido of these demonstrations there
was nothing else to inspire one with the
greatness of the Fourth ofJuiy. Things
went on iu their even way, and if any
emotions of patriotism swelled up iu the
bosoms of tueu, they were hushed and st-i
f led. All the tender and patriotic memo
ries, with which tho reoccurrence of this
day is replete, were :ilont. There was no
jubilee and rejoicing here in Orangcbvrg
Alas I had it not been recalled to the
.a '
tuinds ot many of our citizens by the
little demonstrations that were made, it
would have passed unheeded by. May
the day soon rcdawn that will re
store to our sons that enthusiastic feel
ing of patriotism, which ever used to fill
their bosoms in days gone by upon the
advent of the Fourth of July !
-On Monday last a large milch
cow was offered by the Sheriff for sale.
Several gathered around the crier whose
faces beamed with a desire to purchase
her. ? Among the number who were
greedy for milk, was a colored man. He
commenced to bid. but soon found them
com in" iu so fast that ho fearful his
ability to b- y would soon bo overreached,
so he resorted to a little ._.?me which he
thought would hush all the anxious bid
ders and give htm the last chance.
Looking all around, as if to catch the
eyes of each one present, he auid, ''I've
knewed dat cow fur des las five or six
years, an' I jist be confound ef she can't
out-kick, out jump au' out-run any tiug
uf her kiu 1 tu dis kounty." Iloro all
the bidders stopped, looked at each other
in the face, eyed the Sheriff close
ly, ss If to wond-ir if it were so
Presently he cointucuccs crying ngair,
but to his nstniiubmeut instead of* find
ing new bidders, he hears each one of
the old ones, s.yiug, "The hat bid was
not mine. 1 don't w iu't bor." Sonn,
however, a voice was heard from the
midst of a gr t'ip which stiod at tho
left of the Sheriff's stand, saying, -'I'll
j^ive so and so." This was cried a few
moments, nnd no oth<*r bids being heard,
the vicious milch cow wns knocked off.
W-hru the purchaser was called for, to
tiic utter aHtonishment of all prescut he
wns ascertained to be the very man, who,
a few moments before, said the cow was
no account, and would kick like the
devil. Hut thanks to bis uttcmpt at de
ception, before moving bis cow ouc foot
from v-hcre he bought her, he got a
practical demenstratiou of the truth of
what he assorted a minute or so before.
The cow had ft rope tied to her horns,
tho end of which lay on tho ground be
side her heels. The jubilant purchaser
went behind her to pick up the end of
tho lino, whereupon she let loose aud
give him, w lb both feet, ono surging
kick right in the stomnch that sent him
sprawling. Hero he learned that she
really would kick. The milch cow is
confined iu a stall, aud the kicked man
to his bed.
