-Orangeburg is a pleasant place.

I rate: somc^meu noted for thoir' virtues/
and some noted fcr their knack at tcll
ing all lyrta of talesj (stories), whilo a
?mall minority is distinguished all over
the Cownty for their boriiij propensities.
In short, a #littlo good and a little bad,
a iittle wUdom and a little fools?upon
the whjle, material ?aJ? dent for a Lord
Byron to make up a picture of '"hells in
traiuing" from. Wo have the best
newspaper iu tho County. But aftee
having all these, it is becoming a serious
question whether or not it will do to live
in Orangeburg any longer. The faot of
t is, the fleas and tho very hot weather,
ogeihor with several other promioent
luisauccs, are so annoying that it is itn
/possible to live hero "tn.peice and good
will toward all.'' A meeting is therefore
to bo culled some time next week for the
pufcposeof taking into consideration these
matters. Something must bo done.
There's no living . bore as it is. We
trnst our citizens will bo governed withv
prudneco in the matter, and not act
hastily or rashly.
-In speaking of the end of the race
between tho "Young Americas," and
the "Elliott Hook and Ladders," the
Charleston Courier tried to bo Stuart.
Because the former Company succeeded
in bearing off tho palm, tho Courier
must nocd.s stoop so low as to say its
Engine "deserved to bo crowned with a
gourd wiue." Now our contemporary,
when it got off thut contemptuous fling
at a rcspcctablo Company, no doubt
shook its mane and langhed a broad,
bland, and hollow laugh, and thought
that it could no longer bo said that it was
slcupy and unto diluvian in its ideas, for
it had insulted s real livo, and up to-t he
times, Fire Company. But our boys ull
regard it in a different light. Th?y
think it a "departure" from honorable
journalism to thu-i attempt, without a
Cause, to deliberately insult nearly a
hundred of our best citizens. Others,
who know more of the excentrtc and
quaint oid Courier, say that ifc w;:s sune
tiling like toe j.-i<-ka>s' Kick at the lion.
Any how wo think it w?s uncalled for.
and we would suggest that the same
iidvico it <ravc a Tew days ago to Horace
Grocly about his "young men," it would
profit, by applying to its own?cither
discharge? them or school thorn into bet
tor ways. It would not do for the f How
that penned that smart paragraph about
tho ?'Young Americas" to visit Orange
httrg. If be did, we doubt if" he would
be so fond if crowning things with
"gourd wines" thereafter.
A fow d.iys ago we wcro regaled
ith an exiraordioary story about the
size, flounderlngs and nwful nppearauce
of u "slimy cel." Our informant said
thut he was iu company with a gentle
man of Orangcburg, who whilo fishing
with an angling line in a dead river not
iar from Town, got a bito and pulled
We wcro informed that the boat the
party was in, was a large and steady af
fair ; that three men could sit on ouc
edge of it aud it would not have turned
over ; but that this eel, tills hideous eel
of huge dimensions. . when hooked,
floundered aud pulled so hard that at
ono timo the bout oamo near capsizing;
that in his runs he showed n small por
iuches bro:td ! that toother time whilo
making a tremendous surge to free him
self, he ran his head out of the water
aud showed his teeth. Our informant
was a littlu excited as well as.frightened
and did not notice them closely, but
would judgo tho monster's tushes to
have been two or three inches in length,
and one inch aud a quarter broad. Al
ter flouaderiug about for nearly ten
miuui.es, aud wearing out tho arms of
t\ro nun, this extraordinary fish got
loose. What a pity. It is said he
would have weighed in tho neighbor
hood of one . 1: und red pounds. Old
fishermen te.il us that tho largest they
ever saw was uot heavier than 2} lbs.
All ol the foregoing will bo certified to
before a Trial Justice if thero arc any
disposed to throw cold water on it. It is
so, vile our informant.

House, whither the eccentric and quaiut

Outside of these demonstrations there

was nothing eke to inspire one with the
greatness of the Fourth of July. Things
won't on iu their even way, and if any
emotions of patriotism swelled up in the
bosoms of rueu, they were hushed and sti
fled. All the tender aud patriotic memo
ries, with which the reoccurrence of this
day is replete, were :ilent. There was no
jubilee and rejoicing hero in Orangobvrg. ?
'Alas ! had it not been recalled to the
minds ot many of our citizens by the
little demonstrations that were made, it
would have passed unheeded by. May
the day soon re dawn that wilt re
store to our sous that enthusiastic fool*
ing of patriotism, which ever used to till

advent of the Fourth of July !
-On Monday last a large milch
^ cow was offered by the Sheriff for aate.
j Several gathered around the crier whose
faces beamed with a desire to purchase
her. Among the number who were
greedy for milk, was a colored man. He
commenced to bid, but soon found them
corning in BO fast that he feared bis
ability to b y would soou bo overreached,
so he resorted to a little ame which he
thought would hush all the anxious bid
ders and give him the last chance.
Looking all around, as if to catoh the
eyes of each one present, he said, ''I've
kucwed dat cow fur des las five or six
years, an' I j ist be confound ef *he can't
out-kiok, put jump an' out run any tiug
uf her kin I iu dis konnty." Here all
the bidders stopped, looked at each other
in the face, eyed the Sheriff close
ly, as If to wond.:r if it wero so
Presently he commcuccs crying ngair,
but to his nstouuhiucut instead of find
ing new bidders, he hears each one of
tho old ones, s. yiug, "The 1-st hid was1
not mine. I don't w tu'i bur." Soon,
however, a voice was heard from, the
niid.it of a gr tap which stood at t lu
ll-It of the Sheriff's stand, saying, ??I'll
give so and fo." This wan cried a few
moments, and no other bids being heard,
the vicious milch cow was knocked off.
Wlteu the purchaser was called for, to
the utter astonishment of all present ho.
was ascertained to be the very man, who,
a few moments before, said the cow was
no account, aud would kick liko the
devil. Put thanks to lijs attempt at de
ception, before moving his cow one foot
from where he bought her, ho got a
practical demonstration of tho truth of
what he asserted a minute or so before.
The cow had a rope tied to her horns,
the end of which lay on the ground be
side her heels. Tho jubilant purchaser
went behind her to pick up the end of
tho line, whereupon the lot loose aud
give him, w th both feet, one surging
kick right in the stomach that sent him
sprawling. Hero he learned that she
really would kick. The milch cow is
confined in a stall, nud tho kicked mau
to his bod.
