-We said in last week's "Orange
Peelings1' thai] "we understood there
would bo a Religious Concert given at
tho Presbyterian Church before long.?
To crarruse.of the word "religious." as an
adjective in this connection, wo under*
staud objections have beon thick nnd foot,
the would-be critics saying that Sacred
ought to havo beon the word. Now wo
have uo disposition to rjuarrel, as wo do
not write for the Orangcburg News' to
please the few. But when such ridicu
lous objections ns tho ono noted are
urged against our writings, we cannot
forbear giving them n passing notico,
uud to show of nil the
Shamolcss editors we hnvc, yet tia true,
There nr* as bad abandoned critics too.
Now we said "Religious Concert" nnd
we meant just what we said : and we
will venture to assert that every pursou
pjossossed with three, grains of common
"mother wit" will eoy that wo were cor
roct. Now "sacred" might havo been
sweeter to euphony with the few, but
that would uut huvo mudo it any more
correct than the term "rulignus."
But wo will let Webntor settle the
matter. He says religious means any
thing "concerned with religion; teaching
or setting forth religion ; set apart to re
ligion ; as ? religious society ; a religious
sect; a religiuus place; religious tears,
etc. Sacred he diliues "as not profane
or common ; as, a sacred place ; a sacred
dag ; sacred service, etc.
If this doesn't show that the two
terms are syuonymon?, then we dou't
know what synonyms arc. If it is
correct to say a - religious society, a re
ligious flnce, religious wars, &c, it is
equally correct to shy a Religious Con
ceit, the only difference of the two words
depending tillogcther upon euphony
On thu other hand, it is equally correct
to say Suci'cd Concert; but how in the
name of common sense it can he incor
rect to spunk of a Concert ns a Religious
one, W'j fail to understand. etpcciuly
when it is gotten Up fur a Rcligiou-t pur
pips*.

his teacher. We looked down the prtgS
at the br.y*s writing, and discovered that
he bad spelled communication ever}' time
