-Wc said in lost week's "Orange
Peelings1' that "we understood there
would bo a Religious Concert givon at
the Presbyterian Church before long."
To our use of ?ho word "religious" as an
?adjective in this connection, wo undor?
at and objections have beon thick and fast,
the would-be critics saying that Sacred
ought to havo been the word, Now wo
iiavo uo disposition to quarrel, as wo do
not write for the Ornngcburg News to
please the few. But when such ridicu
lous objections as the ono noted are
urged against our writings, wo cannot
forbear giving them u passing notice,
aud to show of all the
Shameless editors we have, yet tin true,
There ar? ns bad abandoned eritiea too.
Now we said "Religions'Concert" and
we meant just what wc said : and we
will venture to assert that every persou
possessed with thrco grains of common
"mother wit" will say that wo woro cor- j
roct. Now "sacred" might have been
sweeter to cupl ony with the few, but
that would uot hnvo made it any mure
correct than the term "rolig'nus."
But wo will let Webster settle the
matter. He says religious means any
thing "concerned with religion j teaching
or setting forth religion ; set apart to re
ligion ; as <t religious society ; a religious
sect ; a religious place ; religions tears,
etc. Sacred ho^difines "as Hot profane
or common ; as, a Sacred place ; a sacred
dag ; sacred service, cte.
If this doesn't show that the two
terms arc synonymous, then wc dou't
know what synonyms are. If it is
corroct to say u -.religious society, a re
ligious ^lace, religious wars, &c, it is
equally correct to tihy a Huligious Con
ceit, the only difference of tho two words
depending tiltogctucr upon euphony
Ou thu other hand, it is equally correct
to say Sacred Concert ; but how in the
natuu of common sense it can be incor
rect to speak of u Concert ns a Religious
one, w'j fail to understand, etpccialy
when it is gotten up fur a Religious pur
pose.
Rut let us stop with this petty .stuff.
Wc ought not to notice snch, but sumo
bow or other wc have d too So. Wc re
collect having seen once at sohoul a
hoy's copy b ink in which the well
known liihgo, "Evil communications
corrupt good manners'.' was writ* :i by
his teacher. We looked down the page
at the br.y's writing, and discovered that
he had spelled communication every time
with a k instead of a e. We uskv 1 htm
"why be did not follow, tho copy '(" He
replied ' if my teacher spalls wrong, that
is tit) reason why I should." Wc left the
.Couth to his delectable conceit.
