White Labor in South Carolina
?The Agricultural und Mechanical
Society of South Carolina socm deter
mined to introduce reliable labor into
the State, aud accordingly we find that
one of tho most gigantic enterprises ever
undertaken iu the Suuth, is now on foot
in Charleston. As will be seen by an
advertisement iu auothcr column, nn Iai
migration Association has been organized
>for the purposo of securing settlers upon
their lands, nud in order to raise the
necessarily largo capital required, they
havo adopted the expedient of a series
of Gift Couccrts, to begin in Charleston
in October; the ticket holders ol whbh
will be participants iu the grandest op
portunity ever offered to become rich at
a small risk and with a cloar conscience.
The number of tickets issued is 150,000.
and the price is five dollars ench.
The first prize is the Acodemy of
Music, including stores, music halls,&o.,
built at a cost of $230 000. The second
prize is ono hundred thousand dollar* in
cash, the third is twenty-live thousand
dollars; tho fourth is ten thousand dollars
and the fifth is five thousand dollars bo
sides which, there are twenty-four hun
?Ired gifts varying from ten to one
thousaud dollars. The scheme has the
unqualified endorsement of the bust citi
zcds of South Carolina, men known in
all parts of tho United States.
Generals Butler and Gary were both
distinguished officers iu tho Confederate
service, the former having lost a log at
Brandy Station, one of the most hotly
conto? ted cavalry fights of the war. Both
belong to old families in Carolina, nnd
have been doing their best since the war
to restore pcaco in their State under the
United States Government, Gen Unt

tenunt-Govcrnor under tho Reform
party, which acknowledged the political
equality of the races. Mr Chadwick is
a Northern gentleman of large moans,
who has settled iu Charleston, nud de
voted his wealth, energy and enterprise
to the recuperation of tho South. He
is at present the owner of the Academy
of Music iu Charleston and other valua
ble real estate in South Carolina.
