tho Daily Republican a series of articles
upou the situation. They certaiuly re
flect a deep interest, felt by Mr. Hau
sier, for tho country in geucrul. We
will commence tho publication of them
soon.
Thk Columbia Union is edited by L.
* C. Carpenter. It is a Republican paper

despite this fact; despite thu eoiuuiuuiiy
of charitablo feeling that should exist
betweeu nil journalists ; despite tho truth
that wo have done moro for the Repub
lica party (in our county) than tho
Union oditor; despite that sentiment of
honorable feeling that should, and has
always moved the breasts of thoso con
nected with the press, towards each
other; despite the impulse that actuates
fair and honorablo controvercic. es
pecially between men of our craft, yes !
despito^all these, the editor of that
paner, in an unfair, unjust and un
warranted manner pit ohesinto us. And for
what? Because, forsooth, wo arc against
(fc high taxes, and*thc men who have come
here to rob us; because, in other words,wo
have tho manli..css, when we sec anything
wrong in tho Republican party, to say
so, aud further, put the seal of our con
* demnation upou it ; because we caunot,
..jaffcl will not sanction dishonesty, corrup
tion and'fraud ; bcoauso wo weep with
those of our people who weep on account
of an cuormous tax at inn ; because wo
aro Republican aud honest; because we
cannot utter au unqualified approbation
of all the doings of some Republicans,
tho ?7tt'u)? forgets all fairness, aud
flings deadly missiles at us. But wo
aro unterrified. The fling at us falls
harmless upon our shoulders. Gods !
how mistaken that editor is.
The Union goes deeper into malignity.
It says if the taxes are high, it is a fault
of the editor of this piper, because we
aro Chairman of the Hoard of County
Commissioner*. In cur charity we can
forbear saying what wc might with pro
priety assert. Let the Union know,
however, that we had not yut been com
missioned when the Hoard of Equaliza
tion for this County wet. The equaliza
tion (?) had been made?, aud the Audi
tor's books almost completed whoh wc
took our seat. Had wo been installed at
tho time, the taxes of Orangeburg
County would not have been so high,
that is, if pur. voice could lave had any
effect.
What our contemporary says about tho
County Commissioners, wo will answer
by asking its editor to read the present
ment of the last Grand Jury, of this
County. Tho Union ought to be particular.
It doesn't know that there are ?io
charges aguiust tho New Board, there
fore its mistake- And when "tho grave
charges" aud tho "astounding develop
ments," of which that paper speaks are
established, and laid opon to the public

but, sir, if I was one of tho seven sleep
ers, or inhabited the inner caverns of tho |

say that they passed the Act io collect

cause the people are bettor provided at
that time to pay taxes thun at any othet?
time of the year. Somo few may have
been hoodwinked ; but, Mr. Editor, the
leaders, (the carpet bag element of the
Legislature,) work for no 6ueh conside
ration. They arc trembling in their
shoes; for they stand on their sou't.
They know that the Legislature that will
meet December 1S72, will meet without
them. Tho Halls that have rung with
their eloquence i^?) lor so long, will thus
ring no more, forever. Alas! bow s.id

they could have only collected the taxes
for 1870 and 1S71?but by collecting
tho tax for '71, in the fall of '71, their
financiers, Parker & Co., v ould havo a
lick at the taxes collected for '72. Do
you catch the idea, Mr Editor?" Cute
aint it. But I have heard that ali
yankecs arc good at cute tricks, and
that they never have a ludo in the bot
tom of their pockets. I dcubt if tho

Mr. Editor, let us light tho devil with

tax-payer pay a dollars tax in Ovatigo
buTg Couuty this fall, und, we have them
on tho hip. Resolve to buck aud
gag the Sheriff, tho Treasurer, or any
and every other mau who offers to make
a levy on a single thing for taxes, a id
seud them over to me, here in the fork,
I'll take care of them. I'll hide them!
And that man who makes a purchase,
to furnish means to satisfy a tax execu
tion?let's resolve that silent requiems
shall be sung in lonely places. I mean
what 1 poy, Mr. Editor, aud stand rea
dy to head the list of those who will
determine never to pay another tax,
until Carolina is wiped.

and remarked, in a most persuasive tone:

"Well," said Sambo, "Mass Ross, I'll

they'll look better scrambled'."
