\Vk enjoyed hasty trips, during the
past week, to Charleston nod Columbia.
Hud1 tho pleasure of meeting Judge
Graham and Solicitor E. R Seabronk,
bf this Circuit. Judge Oruhaui, vtc are
pleased to annuunco, is giving universal
batwfaciion to tho Bar of Charleston.
Judge Glovku.?Judge Thomas XV.
Glover has been for the jtast week hold
ing a Special Term of tho Court of Com
mon Pleas, at'Columbia, fur trial of such
bases as Judge Melton hod been counsel
in,*a'nd the Court will probably continue
the whole of this week and part of next.
Governor Sen t could nut havo desig
nated p. better and more intelligent gen
Ueman to act in Judge Melton's place,
It is a desorved recognition of Judge
!i lover's abilities, and a compliment to
the Bar of Orangeburg.

Salf.day in AntiL.? Wo have ?o
chronicle tho usual busy crowd, who
thronged our streets on Monday last.
Business briekcued, npring goods were
sold, the hum of voices of uion and hor
*?o? wns heard. Tho Sheriff's throat
tittered sounds clear as u bugle, aud bid
ders were rife aud eager. The rc:nit
teut fever of traffic wan upon the 'burg'
and its pulse beat high and quick. It
is pleasant to note the fitful busy mood
bl our town, the chief feature aud the
cause being the homogeneous crowd that
stands and surges iuour thorough fares ;
?'There every shade of bright existence trace
Tho fire of youth, the diguity of age ;
The .mRtro*\'s culu? austerity of ttruce,
The ardent lover, the benignuut sag* ;
The nymph's light symmetry, fuiincvs* eolid
mien
ray of brnuty cuugbt und tnjnglcd in
he' ?b??i?r" ' -v
Conspicuous in the crowd on all such
occasions is tho coal, hat and stick of
Lark ins, which always assume a busier
nir, a loftier ?tute, and more magnificent
twirl, as the wearer and owner (?). of
these familiar articles n oves among the
crowd, who are but puppets in his band
nnd chess-men in h's game of polttiul
st rife,"
The Sheriff, vfith the knowledge aud

amount of property.
On the first page of this issue may
be found au article bearing upon the
subject of our Free Schools. Our cor
respondent shows up the reverse side of
the picture, and as regards the teachers
of schools, and the privations they are
Buffering the colorings though dark are
painfully true to life. But our people
Should not be too soon to lose faith in a
measure, which bus not as y< t been fair
ly tested. The School System iu thin
Stato is at this time, in its infancy, nnd
nas not uecn in operation long enough
to secure the har...onious working of its
machinery. At the same time we be
lieve to be hard, and cruelly unjust that
<be teachers should be tho sufferers,
from tlfeto irregularities. Teachers are
like other men, and however disagreca
tm fr. ?Iiwltn ?ir.Rf!{
sco both sides of the question, they have
to live. Now we know of soino locali
ties in vri.ich tho people aro faithfully
standing by'their teachers iu this try
ing time. In other places the teacher
takes a Free School and il ho docs uot
>cceivo his pay from the State wilbiu u
ecrt2!? prescribed tio.n, his patrons pay
him for bis sot/ices aud he turns his
public accounts over to them, so that
whenever tho money is paid, the con,,
munity receives the benefit of the Free
School provision Just as in any other
case. This is a good arrangement, and
Htitil the inachinory of the new system
is brought regularly into play, it is one
which we would recommend our peoplj
to make. At one and the same time it
will securo tho advnniugcs of a Fr*e
School, to a community, aud a liveli
hood for the teacher. '-The laborer is
worthy of his hire," and if wo uro to
