[Against these men, tho object of whose ! visit is robbery and theft. lu full, deep sympathy with cur oppressed people, who groan and sink beneath the crush ing weight of tboir cruel taxation. Here we stand to-day. And we point them in full view to these men, the au thors *of their disaster and their wrong. Teachers and Their Pay. Day after day comes *the querulous complaint, and complaining query lrom the teachers of our County, "Where and when and how aro we to get our pay." To say "we duuno," sounds like the sulky school-boy, who cares very little how his master, who, perhaps, has just flogged him, gets his pay, or whether he gets any at all. We do feel a sym pathy for this class of our people, who aro hard worked, illy-paid at tho best, nnd who now are deprived of the means of livelihood. Tho Legislature has recently passed a Supplemental Act to the School Law, making a larger appropriutian for the pay of teachers. It is tho duty of tho Couuty School Commissioners to make the requisition for the pay due to teach ers for past services. We would suggest to the teachers of our County, who we believo huve orga nired themselves iuto a Society, to ap point an active Committee, who will see the School Commissioner, aud press the matter upon his attention. No class of our people, more deserve or more need the regular- paynieut of their salaries than the teachcts, and the matter should be attended to. Let the * teachers make a bold efTort, and noue will withhold their aid, in securing their just compensation. The prcseut School-Low affords ample means of securing a good education to ull the children of our County. If its \ requisites are carried out, by the officers, good teachers, school-houses, text-books, the pay of teachers, and an interest in the cause of education will ho secured. Let the officers do their duty ? ? I?? ^Resolutions, calliug a meeting of the tax-payers of this County on Sulcday in May, may be found below.' That some thing of the sort may be beneficial, wc have no doubt. Let every tax-payer be presont, tho rich und tho poor, and let reason, discretion and moderation, mark their conduct. The people of this County may do something for them selves, iu this mattor, if they will act in a proper manner. Here are the resolu tions : In view of tho embarrassing state of affairs, incident tothc cnormtms taxation, and the distress consequent thereon, and in response to the cull emanating from the Chamber of Commerce, and Hoard I of Trade of Charleston, which recom mend a Convention of tho property hol ders of the State, to meet at an early day in Columbia to consider the subject, there nssouibled severul of tho leading oitizeus of the County, when the follow ing resolutions wcro adopted. Resolved: That we heartily endorso the call of the Chamber of Commerce, and Hoard of Trado of Charleston, which rcccommend an early meeting in each l/Oiiuty u! iii? Di?te, tuT wi? LUfuUSO oi electing Delegates to the State Conven tion to bo held at Columbia iu May, for tho purpose of considering tho subject of the oppressive burden of taxation. That tho distress consequent upon this taxation is wide spread, und the people aro crushed under its weight, and with out some speedy remedy the ruiu will bo general. That wo invite all the property holders to assemble at the Court Houso on tho first Monday iu May to elect Delegates to tho Conven tion.
