ing of this article. That they have deep
cause for discussing this subject, the itn
povished tax-payers know and feel.
"Well might it be expected that the press
of our ?State would thus raise its voice;
and condemn the cause from which this
evil sprung, when the people ot South
Caroliun are about to be laid prostrate
ot ouo fell swoop of the tax gatheror.
Nor are the notes thus sounded by it,
the idle and meaningless words and
threats' of a corps of editor's. The
prime chose and impulse that actuates
.them, the sentiment that prompts and
moves the editorial pen, in this matter,
finds not its origin in the brain of news
paper Inen. Fiom the -people, the op
pressed tax-payers, they rise. In the
hearts of mothers and children, whom
starvation threatens, it lias an existence;
and is it uoL natural to suppose that
their wails and their impending distress
should not only appeal eloquently to the
press for succor and relief, but also to
the 'very strength and manhood
of this State ? Whoso heart is so
hard that the expression from a

have been made to them, but to be

is inhumanly heavy. The very life

them. Their homes are beginning to

before, so completely destitute of money
the constant demand for taxes leaves
them. Even the children are suffering
in consequence of the utter depletion of
the little treasuries of their parents.
The pause of education, d' religion, all
feel the effect. Fathers cannot send
their children to school, because it takes
all they can make to meet tho taxes.
The treasury opens its mouth lo-receive
their i little earnings; and remorse
lessly shut.- in all they have. Nay, it
receives it with a fiendish chucklo.
1'ut our talk will avail nothing now.
f Tho taxes tire heavy : indeed, they arc
\ iulerually so, and we need scarcely hope
for any remedy just now. Our only
hnpo lies with the people. To that
