round about the Engine IIcure, where
aoy number of fair queens wcro,
?from early dawn till dewy eve, engaged
iu decorating the hive with garlands of
flowers and evergreens, in honor of the
gallant boys?who. it is said, arc the
frcqocut causes of certain'pleasant and
delightful conflagration?, against which
there is littlo remedy nud no insurance.
Indeed, we have heard it whispered that
on noue of thcpo occasions has (he cry
of "fire" ever been raised in tho land?
?nor has any of the inccudiai jes ever been
manly ouough to call in the assistance of
his fellows. (Our figures of bees and
boys, queens and firc-muchines may pos

subjects arc ^altogether too inspiring for
tho platonic frigidity of consistency and

# In the afternoon there was a lively

Later in the day. both Companies were
drawn- up in line before the Engine
Houce, and, in tho name of tho Company,
Willie Izlar, nftcr a capital oifhand
speech, presented a beautiful gold head
ed cane to President Moseley. Mr.
Moseley received tho cutting with pleas
ure, but said he would like to see Willie
"do it again."
At seven P. M., the Young Americas
had their ' house hi order," and were
waiting the coming of their guests, and
within a half hour a large company was
present, all in good spirits and humor,
and determined to romaiu so.
As the guests entered, their caw wcru
first saluted by music of such full rich

ask by whom it was so sweetly uttered.

Tlie next regular toast?"The Klliott

A. Hamilton in his usual uunpproacha

As the '?Press" was announced by the
President, Mr. Browuing (Mr. Meyers'
prodeocssor) was called upon. Mr. Brown
ing, in reply, made a few graceful and!
earnest tctnurks, and cbricTudeJ ? by call

upon tho,plea of indisposition resulting
l'ruut his arduous labors in Court, which,
?he liucly said, had almost 1 ?clipped the
wiugs of his fancy, and tied tho chords of
his tongue."
Mr. ITcnry Kuhn, iu full Tuung

i>xoroshly for tho occasion, by Augustus
B. Knowlton, Esq., and entitled ??Under

Dr. Tuber being enthusiastically :ullod
for, sang in a style seldom heard out of
tho best concert rooms, that favorite
gem of Brignoli's, "Good Bye, Sweet
Heart." As the Doctor's glorious bari
tone filled the hull, the audience was
spell bound with a keen appreciative de
light, and as the last words died away,
such thundering cheers, bruvos aud en
cores, rent tho air, that the Doctor was
ohligo to begin again da capo, and, as he
iiuully ceased, it was amid such expres
sions of hearty kindness and good will
as must huvc gratified him as iuteusoly
as his music had gratified his hearers.
Next iu order was "The Town Coun

Society.
Then came, (after more ^IW.fful |

stood on them, and right heartily and

tcr!
The last regular toast was, "Woman !"
As it (or she) was announced there were
tremendous, iterated and reiterated culls
for Major Knowlton.
To do justice to tho manner in which
that accomplished gentleman responded,
is impossible. Although our heurt is
ever thrilled by the merest mention of
tho word woman ! yet, in our enthusias
tic appreciation of her, our control of,
language is nlwiys loBt or weakened.
Not so with Major Kuowlton. Amidst
all his appreciation aud luve of her, he
still retains thut peculiar power of elo
quence that can nloue compliment wo
man as she deserves.
Buist after burst of applause, and
round after round of laughter continu
ally interrupted the Major's witty, pa
thetic and well timed speech, so that it
wus frequently suuie ttOpfteftU before ho
was permitted to proceed ugaiu with his
touching yet iauguter-provoic: ag pertuuo.
1 hen followed nioro songs, wore
Speeches, and more lugcr, until tho "wco
fiina' hours" began to grow space, when
the plsasaut company separated, wishing
tho Young Americas nnd nil their
friends many pleasant returns of the
day.
Alus ! that such happy occasions conic
but once a year. Such speeches and
such music r.vo worthy of throe or four
occasions of the kind in every twelve
I mouth* at least.
The evening pasted away sweetly,
leaving fond and pleasing recollections
iu enoh man's memory. Long life to the
V'oung A inorictis and to those who made
the happy speeches, which f-o richly
charmed every looker on !

The House of Representatives has
sent to tho Capitol 61 tho Nation, three
of its members, to implore of the Presi

the State Government in subduing the
lawless riots of the up country. This.
Committee consisting of Messrs. Whip

10th of last month on their ^mission.
The Chairman Mr. Whtppor. aftef an
absence of a few day--, returned to Co

Whut was the reason of the sudden re
appearance in our tnid^t of one of out
messengers, who wcro to carry the cry ol
distress from our good .people, to the om
nipotcnt father at Washington ?? why
simply, that it was impossible for our Com

with the very laudable intent, as he
could do no good to.his country in Wash
ington, to give his valuable aid iu the
efforts to defeat the most, gigantic at

Greenville Railroad Bill. Tt is true
Mr. Whipper labored iu vain. All his
persuasive eloquence, brought forth in
the most earnest mauuerj could not Dght
against the Simnnku ARGUMENT advanc
ed by the advocates of tho Bill, and the
parties directly interested in it. But be
cause a man bus fought hard and been
Ibeaten, does that detract from the credit
due him V Let us though return to the
Committee Which so singularly failed iu
obtaining au iutorview with President
Grant. Surely the authorities in Wash
ington wcro aware of the coming of such
a deputation, p'ey surely know the very
important mission on which the Com
mittee had been sent, and yet he doors
of the Executive iffie? would not open '
for them, the Chief Magistrate would
not hear them. This action . on the
part of Grunt, admits of two dcdlui ,
tions, cither of which may hi tho true
explanation. First, tho authorities ut
Washington do not recognize a Commit

Representatives alone, ns?jn. iruo reprc

lina, and therefore refuse to !:.-tcn t<>
