Information has reached us of an
other terrible tragedy in Union Coun
ty. Kight prisoners were taken from
the jail and brutally murdered on Sun
day night last, by a mob of disguised
men. A "special" to the Charleston
Daily News thus gives ho particulars of
the frightful havoc made of human life
by these fiends incarnate.
"The facts of the wholesale inoh-niur
ders in Union County scetn to ho .".bout
as follows : A number of mounted men
?supposed to be about live hundred-?
appeared at Union Couvthou.sc about 12
o'clock Sunday night, and proceeded to
the jail. They demanded the keys from
Jailor Hughes and Deputy Sheriff Hill,
who refused to surrender thorn. Mrs.
Hughes tvas then catechisod as to the
whereabouts of the keys, but, being
greatly alarmed, did not answer?merely
pointing to a bureau, where they were
deposited. The drawers wcro immedi
ately opened, the keys obtained, the jail
doors opeiitfd, and ton colored prisoners
(under indictment for the Stevens mur
der) were carried to the hanging grottud
?about a mile and a half from the
town?when six of the party wore shot,
two hung, and two "turned up missing."
The jailor and deputy sheriff were car
" ricd off from the jail about a mile, and
tied in front of the sheriff's residence.
After the jailor had been bound, a l?tter

Words: 'Whereas, it is doubted that
Thomas intended removing the prisoners
from a place of fair trial, the people
wcro compelled to administer justice
themselves.' 'Let not thy right hand
know what thy left hand doeth !' 'Mo

ael of justice must have his martyrs !' "
The "telegram" further states that,
"there is no clue to the perpetrator.!."
Will not this be sufficient to move Gov
ernor Scott from a passive irresolution
in regard to the up country troubles, to
action!

much longer ? Will Goveruor Scott re
main inert and inactive in this matter?

South Carolina will bo declared a nest
of assassins, and the very atmosphere
thronged with Ku-K luxes; wheu the
fact of it is, the whole thing is confined
to the vicinity of Union Court House,
and the outrages committed perhaps by
meu who arc not citizens of our State.
Coda! shall it be said that South
Carolina is unable t) protect hcrselffroin
the outlawry of a few strolling free hoot
ers of Uniou County, and bordering
States.
We say no.
Let Governor Scott call upon the
Law-abiding citizens, and it will not be
said. One hundred oi the right sort of
men, sent to the up-country right now.

guilty parties, and restoring order, than
seventeen thousnud constables.
They would even do better than Uni
ted States troopjj. Wc admit these
would serve the purpose just now; but
we want n lesson taught. As soon u?
order was brought about, these troops
would be taken away, and these outlaws
would feel themselves free again. ]>ut

tives up there, and it will teach these
villinns two icsssons. 1. That their
work is not concurred in by everybody ?
2. That the best men of the State are
ever read}- to assist in having them ar
rested and brought to justice, nnd hung
if the magnitude of their crimes demand
it.
No, we say let us try and take care of
our own State. Let's uot give the North
any more cause to believe that we are
all cut-throats.
The adoption of the course, or one
similar to the one indicted in this arti
cle, will, in our opinion, have a most
salutary efleet.
At all events, JUSTICE demands that
Gov. Scott shall take somo step in re
gard to these troubles, and that quickly.
Action! actWn!! action!!! is the es
sential remedy, and it must bo speedily
applied.

were assured that this point should be
