Information has reached us of au
other terrible tragedy in Union Coun
iy. Kight prisoners were taken from
the jail and brutally murdered on Sun
day night last, by a mob of disguised
men. A "special" to the Charleston
Daily Ncics thus gives tho particulars of
the frightful havoc made of human life
by these fiends iuccrnnte.
"The facts of the wholesale mob-mur
ders in Uuion County seem to be about
as follows : A number of mounted men
?supposed to be about five hundred?
appeared at Uniou Courthouse about 12
o'clock Sunday night, and proceeded to
the jail. Tbcy demanded the keys from
Jailor Hughes and Deputy Sheriff Hill,
\vho refused to surrender them. Mrs.
Hughes was then catechised as to tho
whereabouts of the keys, but, being
greatly alarmed, did act answer?merely
pointing to a bureau, whoro they were
deposited. The dravors were immedi
ately opened, the keys obtained, the jail
doors openGd, and ten colored prisoners
(uuder indictmeut for the Stevens mur
der) were carried to the hanging ground
?about a mile and a half from the
town?when six of tho party were shot,
two hung, and two "turned up missing."
The jailor aud deputy sheriff were car
* ricd off from tho juil nbout a mile, and
tied in front of the sheriff's residence.
After the jailor bad been bound, a letter

et, signed K. K. K.,und contained these
words: 'Whereas, it is doubted that
Thomas intended rcinoviug the prisoners
from a place of fair trial, the people
V?cro compelled to administer justico
themselves.' 'Lot not thy right haed
know what thy loft hand doeth }' 'Mo
loch will have bis victims even if Mich
aol of justice must have his martyrs !' "
Tbo "telegram" further states that,
"there is no clue to the perpetratorj."
Will not this bo sufficient to move Gov
ernor Scott from o passive irresolution
in regard to tho up-country troubles, to
action 1

is strong enough to protect it: Are

much longer? Will Governor Scott re
main inert and inactive in this matter ?

South Carolina will bo declared n nest
of assassins, and the very atmosphere
thronged with Ku-Kluxcs; when the
fact of it is, the whole thing is confined
to the vicinity of Union Court House,
and the outrages committed perhaps by
men who are not citizens of our State.
Gods! shall it ho said that South
Carolina is unable tj protect hcrselffroni
the outlawry of a few strolling free boot
ers of Union Couuty, and bordering
States.
We say no.
Let Governor Scott call upon the
Law-abiding citizens, and it will not be
said. Ouc hundred of the right sort of
men, sent to tho up-country right now,
would do more towards arresting the
guilty parties, and restoring order, than
seventeen thousand constables.

ted States troop^. "We admit these
would servo the purpose just now; hut
wo want a lesson taught. As soon a*
order was brought about, these troops
would be tuken away, and these outlaws
would feel themselves free again. But
send a determined number of white na
tives up there, and it will teach these

No, wo say let us try and take care of
our own State. Let's not give the North
any more cause to believe that we arc
all cut-throats.
The adoption of the course, or one
similar to the oue indicted in this arti
cle, will, in our opinion, have a most,
salutary effect.
At all events, jlhtice demands that
Gov. Scott shall take soiuo step in re
gard to these troubles, and that quickly.

When we say citizen* of South Caro
lina, wo mean it in tlii.j sense. Wo
mean all those who shall live here at
that time, and whose purpose it is to
use what their office makes for them, for
the good of the State ; who will promise
to help lighten the burden of taxation
that now oppresses our people.
