one of the Councils of the Hon Judge,
who undertook to show to the pause,
that a contempt of the Houso could not
possibly have been intended, for as be
understood the law of impeach meet, a
publio officer is otiiy then supposed to be
impeached when the articles of impeach
ment have Ice;, prcaeutvd al the bar of
the 8enato. That the mere fact of atbe
resolution being passed by the Honse, to
impeach is oot yet an impeachment, and
that consequently this more resolution
had no force to suspend the Judgc from
his judicial functious.
The other council, Mr. Melton, wout
further, by snjing that even had there
been such words uttered by the Judge
which might posuibly be ooustruul iuto
so expression of oootempt against the j
House, the declaration of tho Judge
that no such contempt was iutendoJ,
should be considered sufficient among
gentlemen.
After a ^rcat deal of spoaking, prin
cipally by Mr. Wbippcr. the motion of
that gent were adopted, that is Judge
Veroon was to purge himself at the
liar of tho House, from the charge of
contempt. This tko Judge did in a few
wnrdn, wheraupon tho speaker declared
him released, and thus on Jod tho first
scone in the act of the impeach
ment drama now being performed hi tho I
Capitol of the State ot South Carolina.
To-morrow will see the scattering of
the hosts, and it is more than doubtful
whether we shall hare a quorum to trans
act any business.
