that a contempt of the ilouso could not
possibly have been intended, for as he
understood the law of impeachment, a
public officer is uuly then supposed to be
impeached when the articles cf impeach
ment have bee., prcaeutvd at thu hnr of
the 8cnate. That the mere fact di' atbe
resolution being passed by the Honse, to
impeach is Dot yet an impeachment, and
that consequently this mero resolution
hud no force to suspend the Judge from
his judicial functions.
The other council, Mr. Melton, went
further, by saying that even had there
been such words uttered by the Judge
which might postibly be construed iuto
an expression of oootempt against the
House, the declaration of tho Judge

should be considered sufficient among
gentlemen.
After a rarest deal of spoaking, prln
eipally by Mr, Wbippcr the motion of
that gent were adopted, that is Judge
Vernon was to purgo himself at the
Rar of tho House, from tho charge of
contempt. This the Judgo did in a few
wnrdn, whereupou tho speaker declared
Loot released, and thus onded the first
scene in the net of tho impeach
ment drama now being performed hi tho
Capitol of the 8tate of South Carolina.
To-morrow will see tho scattering of
the nosts, and it is more than doubtful
whether we shall have a quorum to trans
act any business.

S. B. Houph, to perform the rito. At
the appointed hour a large number of
persons assembled ou the bunks of Crook
ed Creek, the plaoc chosen for the im
mersion. After bulging aud prayer.
Mr. Hough cntored the water, leading
the Doctor, and the deccut being very
gradual they wero obliged to pioccod

roach a lufflciont depth, but suddenly
were scon to go down, having stepped
over a bauk concealed by the water;
both coon arose to tho surface, and Mi.
Hough regained the bank, but the Doc
tor being unable, to swim was swept by
tho current under a floodgate, only a
short distance below; every exertion
wia made to save him, but in vain. The
body was soon after found and brought
ashore amid the most heart reuding
