December 4th, a sad accident occurred.
A few wookt since Dr. A. P. PoWnall
united with thu Christian Church, and
Sunday was appointed as tha day of bap
tism. Ho requested hit pastor, the Rev.
8. B. Hough, to perform the rue. At
the appointed hour, a large number of
person* assembled on the banks of Crook
ed Creek, the place chosen for the im
mersion. After siuging and prayer.
Mr. Hough entered the water, leading
the Doctor, aod the decent being very
gradual they wero obliged to proceed
aomo distance from the thoro in order to
reach a lufflciont depth, but suddenly
were seen to go down, having stepped
over a bank concealed by the water:
both soon arose to the surlaoo, and Mi.
Hough regained the bank, but the Doc
tor ! .ing unable to swim was swept by
the current under a floodgatn only a
short distance below; .every exertion
wa? mado to save him, hut in vain. The
body was toon after found and brought
ashoro amid the moat heart rending
screams from his young wife and friends
