which might posuihly be oooatrucd iuto
an expression of oontempt againat the
House, the declaration of the Judge
that no auch contempt was intendod,
should be considered eufficicut among
gentlemen.

cipally by Mr. Wbipper. the motion of
that gent were adopted, that ia Judge
Vernob was to purge himself at the
Bar of tho House, from the eharge of

S. B. Hough, to perform the rite. At
the appointed hour a large number of
persons assembled on the banks of Crook
ed Crock, the plaoo chosen for the im
mersion. After singing and prayer.
Mr. Hough entered tho water, leading
the Doctor, and the deccut being very
gradual they wero obliged to proceed
some distance from tho fchore io order to
reach a lufflciout depth, but suddenly
were seen to go down, having stepped
over a bank concalcd by the water;
both soon arose to the suri&oe, and Mi.
Hough regained the bank, but the Doc
tor being unable to swim was swept by
tho current under a floodgate only a'
short distance below; every exertion
w%a mado to save him, but in vain. The
body was soon after found and brought
ashore amid the moat heart rending
screams from his young wife and friends
