We print to-day the opening of a
?nperb story, by E. A. Poe. It is pub
lished by particular request, and will be
worth preserving,^ We will continue it
until eoncludcTf;. '
Imi'hovkm^ts.?The County Corn
missioners will consider to day, estimates
for building a row of offices in the Court
House Square?.0 vThe row will comprise
three offices for the County and three to
be rented as*law offices, and will be u
convenience and' an improvement to the
Town. The . present Court-House wi.l
answer its purposes very well, for the
present, and the County cannot stand
any tax%tton^br Jthe purpose of buildings
a new Court-House yet. The taxes are
a little lower thisyear than lust. Let
them go doVb.
The Young Americas have received
the material for painting their house, and
for papering find gilding the interior of |
their hall. This wilt be one of the most
striking improvements that we could
chronicle. ^.Thcjr hall when completed,
will be a very handsome one.
Stockor'8 Hall, as fitted up by the
Thespian Corps is u unique and ban '
some place for exhibitions. The paper
ing was done by Mr. Gehrcls, who has
exhibited-taste-and skill in his design
and execution. The figures on either
side of the drop-curtain nre classic and
ornate. The general effect is fine mid
pleasing.. Mr. Glenn, photographer, haB
taken a view of the stage and scenery
which gives u very pretty idea of its
arrangement and effect.
AH of these things go to show that
out little Town is vivified with a spirt of |
enterprise and progress which are pleas
ing promises and causes of congratula
tion.
Dtil.L.??-Tbc past week bus been a
dull one fur the merchants. 1 his is to
be accounted for by the fact that our
farmers 4i:rvo generally commenced plow
ing. . This is always a dull time in the
atona. It Would seem that Spring has
set in. and tW problem of anothcr'year's
cr<?j ha* been commenced. The annual
advice: ,pr .'the knowing; ones to the far
mers is to make provisions, plenty of
them, r.s the first .necessity, and save the
' iV? ight and, oilier expense on corn, Ac.,
and when tili? is secured, then think
abduVcotton.
Plenty *>f provision-*, and plenty <of
cotton, too. is our wish for the farmers.
43?i.d.?The sudden decline of gold
for a while paralized trade at the North.
It- has puttied down to nbout 12} and
trade has briskened. Its decline has not
yet been felt in the retail market. The
specie payment spout, started by some
New York houses, has given OSC -Unless

fine Shad were caught in the river on
Tuesday night last. We learn that seines'

near UrancaviHe, and thus the fish are
prevented from coming up the river in
rlarge 'quantities. This is iu violation of
the Fish Law of the last session. We

The Court House for Baknwell
(Jounty.?Where the Court for Barn

Roast Beef??-Aul how beautiful
[ tho words Iook ! How delicious the idea
they convey 1 We have not seen a piece
of beef for an age ! Can't some of our
friends iu the country kill something in
the shape id' a con and bring it in for
us? We can imagine tho "fearful" rush
that would take place around a cart with
fresh beef. All joking aside, fresh beef j
would supply a universal want.
At a meeting of the Elliott Hook and

the Fork of Edtsto was burned to death.
The mother had left the child in tho
house on the floor, sleeping on a pallet
which she had spread for it before the
fire. There was very little fire in the
chimney at the time and it is supposed
thai a spark must have falleu on the
pallet, which consumed it. The child
was discovered by Mr. L. It. Sinoak and
David Cray, who were passing at the
time. It was dead when discovered, one
side of its lace and its hands and feet

Tin: merchants of Wiiiuiugtou, recently
chartered a train of Cure to convey c?
cit siouihts IVuut the interior of the State
to the city free of charge. The result
wa that about six hundred persons
availed themselves of the opportunity,
and were sonn scattered through the
city, purchasing, seeing things they
would like to purchase, and forming the
acquaintance of the merchants. The
trade of the city was materially benefit
ted by the plan.
Our friend of the Barn well Journal,
untieing tins, iccomuietids the same to
the consideration ?t* the Charleston mer
chants.
It would no doubt repay them for
their outlay in chartering the ears.

where oar merchants und dealers can

receive sufficient patronage to induce

Anthony Nixon, murderer of Rich

being admitted whose names were on the
list prepared by Judge Carpenter.
By invitation, wo attended the ex
amination at CJaflin University, at this

waived the prejudice that exists against
this institution, and attcuded, we confess
partly from curiosity. The colored people
have a right to be educated and as
citizens ought to be educated. The
pupils at this school have certainly been
making good use of its advantages and
havo made remarkable progress.
Mr. D. L. lilen has returned to
