The Press Conference.
The Columbia Guardian ami others,
ef the State press have suggested that
alt of the editors of the State, opposed
to the usurpation and corruption of our
State government, meet together in con
ference at Columbia on aha 16th insft.
The Charleston JvVsas, in' advocating
the suggestion, and urging upon all pa
pers of the State to be represented at
?his moating, doer, not understand that'
the object of tho meeting ia to put forth
a platform o? any public declaration of
policy, but to bring the acti-radical edi
tors together "so that they may inter
change views and opinions and make
themselves acquainted by, confernng to
gether, with the feeling and deaira of
every section of the State,"
With this we entirely concur, and We
earnest ly hope that all of out contempo
raries throughout the State will meet to
gether ia conference. Lei. us see whni
are the chances for us, in the grand ef
fort of patriotism, that ae a people we
are about to make. Let ns hear whether
the people of South Carolina are ready
to unite upon a course of action that has
buried pest delusions, that admits facts
that are accomplished, and that has a
bright ray of hope fbr our future.
Let the body of men who band them
selves together for tho redemption of
their State, meet upon a piatform that
knows uo distinction of class, caste or
color; which recognizes whito man, and
black man, as equally cmzsH !
Let us make one more rally, one more
effort, and let us make it, upon a basis,
and by means that are practical, sensible
and that have a chance of success!
We trust that the Press of the State
will meet at thia Conference, and that
they will agree upon a course to be pre
sented, and advocated by them to the
people, which will unite all the honeet
citizens of South Carolina, white and
black, in an effort to aecure the govern*
Jhsnt^into Jthc hands of the honest tjjpd*
* the worthy, unite them upon this sensi
ble admission of what is the reality of
ow situation, and which ia the only
effort that can be successful!
Signs of Progress.
The prompt action of the House of
"Representatives in the United States
Congress, in summarily summoning to
its. bar for trial, its corrupt members
speaks bright hopes, thst honesty is not
entirely trampled in the dust of oblivion.
Wo hope that Whittemore'a party
wilt promptly repudiate this its expoeed
ly corrupt member. Never mind bow
good a he publican he may be, however
far he may go in promises and in asso
ciating oheek by. jowl, hob and nob, with
. the eolored people, let them not harbor
one whom the world knows to be totally
unworthy of the association of honest
men. Let the promptings of sn hon?
heart, be heard and lot tho voters of his
congressional district repudiate bim, and
hoot him from their midst.
Another sign of promise b the defeat
of Butler's Georgia Bill, which would go
to ahow that crushed as is onr sister
State "the Polond of America," as she
has been called, there is a term to her
"durance" and her humiliation. The de
feat of this bill and the adoption of Bing
ham's amendment, will discontinue the
terms of office ot Bullock and the Legis
lature of that State, and give the people
the liberty aud right of a ballot in 1870.

The Census returns just published
?how the following facts:.

have decreased; in four Counties the
whites hate decreased end the blaoks
increased; in two- Counties the whites
have, increased mo& blacks declassed,

In, the whole State the whites havc
decraasod 16,426, and, the blacks have
decreased 26,181. The excess o? decrease
of the blacks over the whites is 9(702.
In 1860 the population of the State
was 703,709; in 1870 it is 661,099.

now pays more for rent than was pro-j

has a family or eight or nine children,
has paid, beside his current domestas ex
penses, a good portion of a debt fbr neon
cy advanced him by his landlord.
The other, a colored man, named Da -
icl Seaborn, has been on tho farm three ,
years or more, starting' with about bread
enough far one year, and two email pigs.
At this time, according to the Green
vif ld Enterprise, be has .as much bacon
as he needs; has bought and paid for
two fine milch cows; has a tide lot of]
atoek hogs: haa a good larm horse, worth
9150, upon which he owes 995; has
pieoty ef flour for breakfast daring the
year; has corn in abundance for bread
aud stock, also fodder, and some to spare; j
baa eightween acres cf wheat, put in
with his own seed, two-thirds of which
proceeds will be his own ; baa a half in
terests in five bales of cotton, v olghing
from 440 to 500 pounds.
These' are model workers-seed els
worthy of imitation. And it must be
remembered that these men had no lend
commission to help them, and had no
labor com miss toner to meddle with their
affaire. They went manfully to work;
and they made money. Work l warb !
