surreptitiously resigning to avoid the
penalty of Iiis misdemeanor, has been
followed by Messrs. Golluday' of Ken
tucky, and Mr. Deweese, of North Car
olina. The manner of the gcntlemou in
?soaping their punishment at the bauds
of the House, will add to the contempt
with which the public regards them., Ami

heads, let them slip out of public sight
forever. We repudiate utterly those who
will re-elect members to the same House

The New York Journal of Commerce,
in a thoughtfu' article upon the failure
to do jury duty, proposes a remedy. It
would "allow all civil suits to be tried
before a judge alone iu cvory case where
neither party demanded a jury. This
would strike out tho oall for such service
from three-fourths, if not nine-tenths, of
tho civil coses on the calendar. There
are few disputes in which both parties
and their lawyers would not rather leave
tho decision to the bench than to the
jury-box. In the remapping cases, let
any party demanding a jury be* compelled
to give security for the p:\yjjtent of a
sum sufficient to furnish ample remunera
tion to those who may be compelled to
givo their valuable time to the task."
