ihe history of Orangeburg. The Young
Americas cclobralo the fifth teen anniver
sary of their company, by a Shooting
Match in the morning and a Parade at
t o'clock, P. M.
The money taken in payment for the

painting the Young' America Engine
House. The cause is a good one, und
the Young Americas deserve tlu cordial
?ww handsome support of the communi
ty. Tha idea of a shooting match is
?so of tha happiest that could have been
suggested. /We hear of several marks
n men, who arc practising with their rifles'
and pistols for the occasion, aud there
Hill no doubt be some crack shooting.
Let all conic and sec and shoot.
The Parade in the afternoon w'dl be
a marked orte, as the Elliott Hook and
Ladder Company have been courteously

A Woodkv 'Cabdagk.?The woll
kaown Mcrvin, has astonished our wise
acres, and oursclf by bringing in a very
remarkable natural curiosity. It ap
pears to be a knot or excrescence, on the
root of a pine, most beautifully sculp
tured and carved, and looking very much
like a wooden cabbage.
It is supposed by some that the knot
grew on the root up into the furu leaves
and as it forced its growth formet a
mould a'?oiig the leaves, and Became a
perfect and curious oast.
Connecticut has produced woodeu nut
megs; but here she ia outdone by our
wooden eabbngc.

citement produced by the passage of a
balloon over our Cotlnty on Wednesday
last, is explained by the fact that a Mr.
S. A. King did ascend in a balloon at
Augusta und passed down the rail road
over to Clarendon County. lie passed
Mr. Wcs. Culler's place ucar enough to
be hoard by the family, as he asked sonic
question. His descent was rather danger
ous, the balloon lodging on the top of a
dead pine, and thou falling violently to
the ground. The mronaut however es
caped unhurt.
Attention is called to the advertise
ment of the Piedmont and Arlington
Life Insurance company. Mr. Jas. II.
Fowles is their Agent at Ornngcburg.
A New enterprise.?We direct
attention to the advertisement of Mr. J.
C. Dcbby. in to-day's issue, calling for
agents and canvassers for the sale of
several valuable standard works. Mr.
