Sals-Day.?Came oa Mooday last
and passed away more quietly than the
previous coo.
The weather was very cold and dis-1
agreeable, and the skies looked as if they
were ready as on a former occasion to
drape the scene in a winding-sheet of*!
f foow, or at any moment, to burst into a
flood of tears, at human depravity, but
fr^fortunately they found no occasion for]
Seither such expression or rebuke, and
Preserved Jhuir supplies, until luesduy,
m when their pent-up feelings found vent
W i? ? shower of joyful rain.
Whether the causo of it was to be
f f' und in tho coneuro of the News, or
elsewhere, it matters not, but certainly
there was a far better behaved crowd in
Town On Mooday last than upon the
same occasion in January. The crowd
appeared to bo matter-of-fact, aod iu for
business. Every one seemed to have
come to buy, sell, or be sold, und not to
get drunk. Of course there were some
who were "in the spirit on Salesday," and
somebody wanted to fij;ht unyhody but
f nobody would fight him, but it waa al
together a derided improvement on the
former occasion. 7"
The Sheriff, and tho Assignees were
busy, and sold about 10,1 S4 acres of land
for about ?14000.
They were a great many mules ami
horses exposed for sale, there being about
}r nine ''bunches of stock" in Town. About
thirty head were sold and brought lair
prices.
The lot with dwelling thereon, Amelia
St. estate of S M. Kenuerly, was sold
for $700.
*The lot adjoining the same, 3 acres
brought $3G0, and the lot corner of
Amelia and Broughton St., one and a
half acres brought $115.
Improvements.?The march of pro
gressive enterprise and improvement in
Oraugcburg is still onward and upwnrd,
for several new buildings have gone tip
in the last mouth. Mr. Tread well has"
put up a new store on Main Street which
is well filled by Mr John Davis with a
stock of goods. A few doors above, Mr.
M. Albrccht 1ms erected a neat shop iu
which he is at work at the shoe business,
assisted by several good workmen. This
building did spring up almost in a night,
li'ie '-the armed men.*' Still though
r ?pidly put up. the purpose of the place
is to secure to its customers a good ?'un
derstanding," and it is well supplied with
last?.
Am the Ni:\vs has been hying to
keep pa.-'e with the march of improve
ment. Wo have added to our Office a
'?Sanctum, which will soon bo completed
in which we expect to receive the "sub
stantial" congratulations of our friends.
Tho room below will he occupied as
"our" law offieo, in which wo expect to

Tho dispatch"* from Columbia yester
day, report that the Senate has eoufirmed
the appointment of T. K. Susportas as.
County Treasurer in place of Juo. D.

The annual report oftho Superintuu
liont of Education shows that 168,819
Children, between tho ages of 5 and 18
?re attending school in 26 counties of the
State. Of the total number, 68,108 child
ren are wbit?, and 100,711 colored. There
are 381 schools with 478 teachers, of
whom, 405 are South Carolinians, aud
73 are Notbernors. We hope that the
time will soon come when every child in
the State will have within his reach aud
moans a plain, commercial education.

New York papers say that Mr. A. T.
Stewart has added by purchase one thous
and acres to his Homestead tract, and is
now having it laid out in lots with broad
streets and avenues. It is Mr. Stewart's
intention to build a village.
Failure Op the Ice Crop.?The
Eastern papers speak oi the probability
of the failure of the ice crop on the At
lantic seacoast. In this vicinity no ice
has as yet been packed this .vintcr. The
probability is that the country generally
will have to rely upon the northwest for
its supply next summer. The Upper
M ississipi furnishes excellent ice every
wiuter, and the puckers ot that region
have a prospect for a ready market, lee
dealers of this city think there will uot
be euough j ut up here this winter to
supply the demand of the city, a od that
thoy will have to look to the north for

the following results; I left four rows
by the side of that which was guanoed,
and from theso four ungUanocd rows 1
gathered forty pounds cotton, and from
lour of the guanoed rows on same soil
and cultivated alike, 1 gathered one
hundred and one pounds. / believe the
Plu'ul.r is the best fertilizer that has been
used in this section this ytar?} it stood the
drouth better than any I saw. The hind
I used it on baa been cleared thirty years
-it is a light gray soil. I used 200 lbs.
per acre. Where / useil the Guano thi
crop ttowl the drouth better than where
tlure was no'w.
