For many years, indeed as long as the clearing of forest land for agricultural purposes has been necessary, (and this period dates anterior to the days of Co lumbus,) the great difficulty in clearing has been to get rid of the stump or root of tho tree which retnaiued in the ground after the tree was felled and converted into the thousand and oue uses for which the timber was necessary. In such laud, iuterlayed with roofs and stumps, the modern improvements in agricultural implements could not be mude use of. and iu .these days when all such labor saving machines arc most essential to the thriving furnier or planter, he must lir.-t look to the radical clearing of his land. Our enterprising fellow-citizen and master mechanic. Mr, James If. Estsqn, hns given this subject much of bis atten tion of late, mid has been so successful as to invent a very simple machine which has been illustrated and described :a the pcepuiber number of the Rural Carolinian but which was uot put to the test until yesterday. This now inven tion of Mr. Easun is appropriately called the Jacques stump extractor ;" and on trial yesterday with a leverage of only 36 inches, it raised 1 G000 tons I iron ; whilo the young man who worked tho lover felt no more inconvenience than if working a common cistern pump, with a tcn:fbot leverage, a man, it is suppos ed, could raise one hundred tons ; and the stump which would resist this force should be left to its native bed. Mr. Easou has applied for a patent for the extractor, and in the course of a few days will take it up to souio of the neighboring farms and extract sotue of tho hind teeth of old mother earth.?
