Negroes at the Academy of Music. " ' ' ' ' r J ' -I About noon on Suturduy lust, says the Charleston News, Mr. John T. Ford, the lessee of the Academy of Music, was ar rested in that building during rehearsal, Upon a warrant issued by Magistrate T. J. Mnokey. Tho writ was bused ou the affidavit of a negro man, stating that ou the previous evening, January 7th, he had visited the Academy under Mr. Ford's management, applied and offered money for a ticket of admission to the orchestra or dresa circle ol tho building, to witness the performances, and was re fused by Mr. Ford's orders, in violation of the laws of South Carolina, made in pursuance of the acta of Congress for bidding any distinction on account of | race, or color or previous condition. The officer iuformed Mr. Ford that if | be would proceed to Magistrate Mackoy's office, No. 29 Broad street, he (the offi cer) would follow in the roar. This sug gestion was complied with, and the scat of justice reached. The magistrate was surrounded by a large crowd *>f colored people, evidently waiting for the trial. Tho warrant and affidavit was read to Mr. Ford, and he at once waived an ex amination, and stated his readiness to en ter into bonds and appear beforo the Cour; of General Sessions, and expressed his desire to test the law speedily and thoroughly. Tho bonds were given by Mr. Ford personally, and Messrs. John Chadwick and John II. Devereux, in the sura of five hundred dollnis each. Another warrant wus then served, upon tho affidavit of n negro named Chtusseu, declaring that ho hud presented a ticket and was refused admission by the doot kceper.. The examination was waived in this case also, aud like boud.s were exe cuted. The magistrate, in an explanatory way, remarked that the colored people of Charleston embraced many pcrsous of | intelligence and refinement uud charac ter, who did not desire to intrude among the vroiic.-. inn insisted upon precisely tV* saute accommodation in the same part of the Academy. Others of the race expressed their re luctance, in discussing the case, to asso ciate with the poorer darkies (black trash) who might visit tho Family Cir cle, but wished that black us well as white "aristocracy" should be provided for. Several really respectable colored per sons, during the day, disavowed all sympathy for a movement denounced by them us a political trick, aud a vowed willingness to sit i.i the places provided for their own race when they visited the Academy. It is stated that the case will bchcard by Judge Carpenter at an early day in Chambers, and that no attempt* to test tho right of admittance will bo made pending the suit.
