Tho Daily Newt, last week, published
a letter from the ^ritish Consul at
Charleston, Mr. H. P. Walker, to Gen.
Hagood, President of the South Caro
lina Agricultural and .Mechanical Socie
ty, informing him of the arrival of a
party of immigrants on the steamer Mar
mora, and asking for reliable iu forma
tion, to enablo him to aid these people
in selecting homes iu our State.
Those Counties which, through the no
tion of their auxiliary Agricultural So
cieties, will offer the best inducements
to settlers, will of course receive them.
An impetus has certainly been giveu
to immigration, and it ia one of tho chicl
duties of our Couuty Agricultural Socie
ty to make provision for tho reception of
these new comers.
Besides7 introducing into each county,
?he very best of .aous or laborers,
their settling iu tho couuty will change
the majority iu too ballot box.
There is no telling but that by liberal
and heudsome offers upon the part of our
planters, who have land and even* bouses
unoccupied, a sufficient number of these
eniigrauts could bo induced to settle in
Orangeburg.

A bill to carry into effect the pro
visions of the constitution in rotation to
the rights of married women was the
principal topic of discussion iu the House
on the 7th,
The bill provides that tho real and
personal property of a married woman,
w*hether held by her at the lime of her
marriage or accrued to hor thereafter,
either by gift, grant, inheritance, devise,
purchase or otherwise, shall not be sub
ject to levy and salo for her husband's i
debts, but shall be her separate property,
which she shall bequeath, devise or con
vey in tho same manner, and to the same
extent, as if 3hc were unmarried; and all
deeds, mortgages and legal instruments,
of whatever kind, shall be executed by |
her in the same mnuner. und have the
same legal Abo und effect, as if she
were unmanicd; that she sh;i!l have the

in her own name, and to take proper
legal conveyances therefor; and to con
- tract and be contracted with, iu the. same
manner as if she were unmarried : she
?hall, with her separate properly, %c
subjected to the same legal rights as if
she wore, unmarried ; nor shall any joinder
of her husband as, a part)- with her be
necessary in any action brought by.her.
or against her in matters relating to her
separate property, or arising nut of her
separate contracts: Provided, that the
husband shall not be liable for the debts
of the wife contracted prior to their mar
riage
It is a noticeable fact that those who
mostly discussed the bill were single men,
/ und.being "not in gear," expressed them
selves very strongly. The. married men
had very little to say upon it, and said
that littlo in a way which appeared to
mean that a bill allowing any rights to
women was very absurd, as they took
them anyhow.
President Grant's fiifct message has
been road iu Congress. It recommends
that Congress enact a law requiring tin
Governor of Georgia to convene tin'
members first elected to tho Legislature,
(includiugc tbo colored members who^
wore ejected,) and admit only those to
seats, who will take the oath required
by tho reconstruction acts. It recom
mends that tho members of Congrosf
from Virginia be admitted to their scats,
regarding that'Stnte fully reconstructed.
The results of the elections in Texas und
Missippi, are not known. The President
hopes that tho action "of those States will
besuch as Congress will approve, and that
their reconstruction be complete. . In
regard to Cuba and the Tariff tho Presi
dent, recommends "no policy."
