We learn that Miss Susan Buir, dan*" ter cf Mr. John Buir, living near F /Hole Church, fell in the fire, during a fit, on Friday, 19th inst. One of her arms; was burned to a crisp, the other arm and her back were sIbo very badly burned. i J .' ? ? - A little negro was burned to death on Sunday night, at the Bev. Mr. Chap lin's place, about eight miles from Town. It seems that a room attached to Mr. Chaplin's kitchen caught fire, and the mother with an infant escaped out of the house but it was impossible to save the boy three years old. Co-Operative, Building and Land Purchasing Association.?This emi nently practical and beneficial ejitorprise is about to assume "a local habitation aud a name." Quite n number of good liamcs have been added to the list at this office. It is probable that a meeting of those interested will be called next week. Tho Board of Equalisation will be in session from the 13th to the 21st of De cember, 1809, when our citizens will have the right fd' appeal from the As snWnent of the Township Assess-TS to this. Board, and we would advise those "who have been erroneously assessed to appear before the Board. The advertise ment of tho County Auditor appears in this issue, to which your attention is called. Ourt Town?Fire Dkpartm knt, ETC.? We like to chat with our readers about the growth and condition of their pretty and thriving Village. Nothing is noire gratifying to us than to note, the siirus of its progress and restoration. No" ?<?w? in the State has recuperated more pYOmptly and rapidly from a more com plete ?in than has Orangcburg. Not only nW the drbri* of its conflagration completely removed, but the buildings that have arisen from its mouldering ashes arc beautiful nod striking improve ments upon those which they have so promptly replaced. Alre dy has Orange burg restored itself. Aud yet its pro gress does not cease. NcW stores, new residences uro springing up around us. Its business has increased in proportion with these outward tokens of its pros perity. Indeed these sigus are the truest and most unmistakable indicia of real business progress. ?? Germs of ucw ideas arc everywhere aud in every department of thought and * enterprise developing themselves into living activities. The disposition of our citizens aud our merchants is public-spirited aud liberal. They are ready ever to re spond to and encourage enterprise-' that promise benefit to their community. This is doubtless the potent cause of our advancement. Thcso arc the cheering signs aud promises for our future. Our Fire Department is ns well or gauized and as efficient as that of any town of comparative size in our State. The "Young America" as an organiza tion is, for its numbers aud its concotni 5* tants, a model. Well officered and manned, thoroughly disciplined, they have proved themselves in their past ca reer, to be ,up to their proud boast of ???being found over where duty calls , them." They are prepared for the die . ?chargo of that duty aud have been prompt and efficient to meet it. The "Comet," our colored Fire Com^ pnny, is admirably composed. Its mem bers comprise the respectable colered ma terial of the town. They uro well dis posed, and ever ready to do their part ^wheu called upon. Their company is in admirable working order. And "The Hook and Ladder Com pany," has assumed a position in the near prospective. So generously and well have our citnzcus responded to their ^ appeal for aid to purchase the Apparatus that the smount needed is almost already ? obtained. Its promises of success amount almost to assurances. This organization will complete our Fire Department aud put it incomplete e aud effective condition. We would urgo upon the Board of ~ Fire Masters tho importance of their at tending to the supply of water. More fixe wells ere absolutely needed. The matter should receive the early attention of this Board and, of Council. By at. tent ion to this important matter, our Town will have all the appliances and means for the prompt suppression of fires. & This end obtained will prove a material benefit to Oraogoburg. The security and value of its prosperity will be en hanced. Our farmers, too, by their industry and enterprise contribute largely to the progress and growth of their County Seat. And they can sympathize with us in rejoicing at these pleasing tokens of our prosperity. A bright little episode iu its young career occurred at tho meeting of the "Elliott Hook and Ladder Company" on Monday evening last. Captain Brigg mann, of the Bourd of Fire Masters, and Mr. McNamara, of the Town Council, were present, and responded to the com plimentary resolutions, which were unani mously passed by the Compauy, ? with very encouraging addresses, Captain Briggmuno concluding by inviting the whole party to adjourn to his establish*' meut. The iuvitation was accepted, and bumpers to the success of tho "Elliotts," and tho health of their generous host, were drunk of tho Cnptaiu's rosy wine. Parade op the Younu Americas.
