"Wednesday morning our County Agri
kultur! ' Society held its First Autiual
Meeting. The old Soap Factory build
ing was improvised for tho occasion,
where at VI o'clock, before a largo and
brilliant auxliuuce, Capt. F'. M. Watina
uiaker, of St. Matthews, delivered the
Annual Address.
Tho occasion was au eloquent otic ; the
beauty aird strength of tho County were
assembled, for the first time, since the
prostration of* our Agriculture, to rejoice
together iu social festivity, ut the bright
promises of its restoration. Fair and
noblo women were thure, and proud,
brave tncu. The bright sceuc told elo
quently that despite the ravages of war
and the humiliation.'- of a vulgar and
vruel despotism, this people were invin
cible, their pure houor unsullied by con
tact with loathed pollution, and their man
hood unbowed beneath the yoke of op
pression.
Ca.pt. Wuunamnkor did ample justice
to the occasion, in his graceful und pret
ty address. It's tone <wns that of heroic
?fortitude and sublime hope of dcliverauce
and redemption, nnd it was rcplcto with
touelics of eloquence.
1 At the conclusion of tho address, Dr.
W. F. Burton, President of the Society,
invited the audience to partake of the
collation spread out before them.
After the Pic-Nio, the gay patty re
solvod itself into the mcrrin ent of a
dance In a room up stairs, in the same
building, music and the dunce held
graceful sway until a late hour in the
evening. The whole occasion was a
happy success.

The two men succeeded in rubbing
out and making their escapse.

Sheriff Biggs, one of tho prisoners, Ca
pers Edwards, has beeu recaptured uud
it is more than probable that the other
will soon be secured.

Charleston on Monday last.

The building is now virtually comple
ted, and occupied by Mr. Stocker, nnd is |
certainly one of the moat pleasing and
emphatic tokens of the business progross
of Ornngeburg, Binoe it emerged front
its Shcrmanio luins. The situation is
ouo of tho prettiest in our Town, and a
very good business stand, being in the
very heart of tho busiuess locality and
opposite to tho Court House Square, in
which wo expect soon to sco the beauti
ful and grand proportions of a new Tomple
o! Justice arise. The style of architec
ture of Mr. Stacker's establishment is
unique, novel to oqr village', and pleas
ing.
The front presents a very handsome
appearance, tho lower story being quasi
stone, which when painted and sanded,
as Mr. Stocker intends, will be really
Striking, and will bear a close resem
blance to the living granite. Tbc inte
trior oi the store is large, commodious,
and handsomely appointed and arranged.
Tho pleasing effect of the exterior is
kept up and enhanced by the handsome
painting and garniture, of the interior,
tho stock of goods, in its varied and
chccquercd arrangement, relieving aud
cheering the eye. We say. with a feel
ing of prido in our pretty town, that it
is now graced with as unique, tasteful
and well appointed a store as is to be
found between Columbia aud Charleston.
The building is two and a half stories
high the second floor being in one large
room, and intended to supply a want
which wo have often expressed, namely,
a convenient hail, for the purposes of
public entertainment. This want is sup
plied uow in Mr. Stocker's building.
Tho hall is large enough for nil purposes,
well lighted and ventilated, easy of in
gress, and by the proportion of its size
to its support, capable ot holding nil the
weight that can be placed withiu it.
This with its perfectly ievei atid smooth
floor, will mako it tho most desirable
room in Orangeburg for dancing parties.
The entrance to the hall is on Ci.icrch
street, and the flight of stairs, gradual
and easy of ascent. ? - ??
Wo congratulate our townsmen, Upon
the possession of these advantages, and
upon this bright and expressive token of
the progress and prosperity of the town.
We canuot forbear a word in praise
of the architect, Mr. Jonathan Lucas,
to whose perfect taste, we are indebted
for tho beauty, strength and proportion
of the new building nor omY in praise of
Houry Dickson, contractor and buildur,
whoso skill, and industry, under Mr.
Lucas' superintendence huvo carried out
the pretty idea, and in the words of
Orangcburg's most gifted and most la
mented son made, it "grow to marble
and express itself in granito."

Orton Williams, who has for six years
been supposed to have boon executed

of insurgent "black-horse" cavalry, light

The story is almost loo romantic to be
true.
