The meads have lost their flowers,

Durability of Timber.
Beginners arc often greatly perplexed
about the proper season for selecting
timber. A great difference of opinion
exists upon the subject, chiefly owing to
?he fact, that very few persons have
systematically cxperhnentod, or kept
notes of the result of their experiments.
Every young farmer will be surprised
often, by the want of practical informa
tion among his seniors, and more at the
discrepency of opinions upon subjects
about which it would seem to him every
body should agree.
,An experience of many years, backed
by tho experience of many practical
farmers and mechanics, has led the
writer to tho conclusion that the proper
time to select timber for durability, is in
the early spring, when tho sap is flowing
freely. Every u!d farmer knows that
a rail made out of a tree deadened when
the bark slipped freely, will last um long
?gain as one made out of a tree cut in
the winter.
An experienced and intelligent wagon
maker told the writer that he could blow
through a spoke cut in the winter, while
one cut in the spring would not admit a
breath. I have seen boards gi>t in March
which wero sound, when bun ids out of
the same kind of timber, got iu Deeom
ber, had completely rotted. Tho reason,
we thiuk, is obvious. Timber cut when
the aap is running freely, contracts
rapidly, and the pores are all closed;
while timber cut in the winter, while
the peres are open and dry, will always
admit water by capillary attraction, and
hence decay more readily.
The opinion you sec so ofton ventilated
in the papers, that posts sot "wrong end
np," will last longer than those set as
the tree grew, is all humbug.
Charring a post is a protection. The
point which always begins to decay first,
is whore it oomos in contact with the
ground?"between wind and water," to
use the sailor's exprossion.
Black walnut, wild cherry, mulberry
eedar and post ouk, make the most
durable posts. Chesuut is liable to be
destroyed by worms, and so is sassafras.
We would like to have the experience
of practical farmers and mechanics upon
this subject, and have thrown out tho
above notes as provocatives.

as the owners, and therefore in deep
plowing, and onough of it. All the
better if it be a subsoil plow.
We believe in large crops, which leave

at once.
We believe that every farm should
own a good farmer.
We believe that 'ho best fertilizer of
any soil, is tho spirit ot industry, enter
prise and intelligence?without this,
lime and gypsum and guano will be of
little use.
We believe in good fences, good barns,
and good farm Iioumuh, good orchards,
and children enough to pick the fruit.
We believe iu a clean kitchen, u clean
wife in it, a clean cupboard, a clean
