"writer accompany . - j ? i-m - ^ Thi Anniversary op the Debat ing Society.?Tho Orangeburg Young Mens' Debating Society, celebrated their first Annrj^rsary on Tuesday evening last, with a! nice little collation, nt the IlgUj over Stockor'e store, and a happy, | merry affair'it'was. w "A feust ofjreaBon and a flow of bouI,' tho genii of eloquence, mirth, wit and ?sentiment presided over the festive scene and each contributed its offering to the occasion. Tho affair was a handsome success and should be a bright encouragement to the young Society, and an assuring promise ?of its prosperity. These young gentlemen have persevered to maintain their organization, and too much praiso cannot be bestowed upon thorn for their success iu that their Society has thus happily celebrated its first birth-day. Among tho in vited guests who wore present upon the occasion were. Capt. Jas. F. Izlar, Capt. Mortimer Glover, Dr. A. S. Sallcy, Harpin Riggs, Esq.. Dr. E. J. Olivcros, Dr. B. M. Shulcr, Thos. H. Cooke Esq., Thoa. Ray, Ohas. H. Hall, Esq., Mal colm I. Browning, Eaq., aud many others of our citizens, who by their presence testified to-their sympathy in the associa tion. Mr. K. ?Uybinson of the Committee of Arrangements,In a Tew appropriate re tnarks bade, the guests welcomo to the '?good things" prepared for them. These *'things" were subjected to a spirited aud exhaustive discussion, until the sub ject was very prettily ^disposed of. After this followed seircimonts, songs,' speeches, aud the iiierry hours of the night glided away on rapid wings. The deep sympathy of the guests with th<: objects of the_socicty, aud the couvteuos ? and festive spirit, '-Autt were -exhibited 'throughout the evening, marked it as u bright and happy re-union. High words of encouragement wcro ? ppoken to these young gentlemen iu ?their pure and uoble undertaking, of 8clt-improveuiout, and .promotion of the ?cause of Literature nn8 Education; ^merry.songs wore sung; neat little .-pe tard* of wit ami hmnor exploded iu bursts of laughter; and long roars greet ed the rehearsal of tho "Opera," again. Thus sped the morry hours, nud as tht:y dopaTted they left happy echoes iu ?the memory of this mcmeutood occasion (Firne has chronicled the first anniversary of the ?Dobating'Society.and ?umi'kod its ?register "one and a bright one!" At the ?conclusion of the evening Mr ?Robinson rose and in a 'happy manner thanked 'the guests for their pretence and well wishes for the Society. At their request, Malcolm I. Browning, Esq., responded in behalf of the iuvited guests, aud expressed to the Society, their gratification and pleasure upon the occasion, and bade them look upon it as =a harbinger .of succoss aud be encouraged to maintain their organization. The Crops.?Our farmcis calculate on a two-thirds cotton crop this season. Peas and Rice are suffering for rain,-and unless wo ha?ve some good showers soon and often, these crops will be a total (failure, at least some of our farmers in St. Matthews say they will not make the ?opd planted.
