An Extraordinary Man.?One of I
tbe most extraordinary cases ot peculiar
formation in the human body we wit
nessed a few days since at Connelly's
Hotel, Mercer, in the person of n colored
man, a stranger. It is hardly correct,
perhaps, to call it a case of malformation,
as the phenomena were entirely internal,
the man presenting no unusual appear
ance whatever. The person, by some
inward muscular power, which he cannot
explain, can shift the position of his
heart at will. We went to see him, not
believing half that wo had been told,
hut were convinced in less time than
it takes to write it. He requested us to
satisfy ourselves that his heart was in
the position usually occupied by thut
organ. Plaoing our hand ou his breast
we could feel its beatiug distinctly. Ho
commenced a series of contortions with
his abdomen, rolling it over and over
several times. At the conclusion of this
striking exhibition, we placed our hand
upon a lump in his leftside below his
waist, and there was the heart thumping
away as if nothing unusual was the
matter. A few contortions and the frisky
organ passed across the abdomen, and on
the right side kept np its work of throw
ing tue blood through the system as
regularly as if in its natural position.
More contortions and it traveled back
home, its course being easily traced
?Qu?* the skin till it passed under the
ribs. The man Uten commenced a sort
of rotary motion of the bowels, apparently
turning them over several times, when
we felt a complete set of ribs covering
the abdomen, tho regular set being in
their usual place. Turning the bowels
is the opposite direction the false ribs
disappeared. On being naked if his par
ents had more childrjn like him, he
replied that he had a brother ovor six
foet high, who could reduce his stature
to something less than throe feet. We
believe him readily after having witnessed
the above performance.?Exchange.
Bust in Cotton.?The Macon (Ga.)
Telegraph of Saturday, says s "Not one
in twenty of the planters from the coun
ties of Central and Southwestern Georgia
with whom we have conversed during
the last week gave us anything like a
favorable report of their cotton crop. All
were the rustiest, set of planters we ever
saw, and sty the rust is ruining their
cotton."

Cotton vs. Independence.?The
theory of the cotton plantaris,?"themore
cotton** the nioro money. ' It money was
independence, the practice would confirm
the theory. There is a great difference
botween having money, and handling
money. Cotton planting might be com
pared to a fishing net. The same quan
tity of thread will make a large net or a
small one, according to the size of the
meshes. But the larger the meshes, the
less the fish secured. More fish may he
handled, hut fewer will be held. A farm
with a wellstocked corn crib aud meat
house, all homemade, is a net with small
meshes. Money may not bo so plenty
there, but it takes but little to do.
There are two classes of farmers?one
depends mostly on the cotton crop, the
other mostly on the provisiou crop. The
former ore as a rule generally "hardup."
Tho latter are independent.
No Room for Little Mary.?A
mother, who was preparing some flour to
bake into broad, left it for a few moments,
when little Mary?with childish curiosity
to boo what it was?took hold of the
dish, which fell to the floor, spilling the
contents. The mother struck the child
a severe blow, saying angrily, that she
was always in tbe way. Two weeks after,
little Mary sickened and died. On her
death bed, while delirious, she asked her
mother if there would be room for her
among tho angels. "I was always in
your way, mother; and you had no room
for littlo Mary! And will I be in the
angola* way ? Will thore be no room for
me?" Tho brokeu-hcarted mother then
felt that no sacrifice could have been too
great, could sho have saved her child.
A Sad Romance.?Some throe years
ago a young German, whoso family h;i<l
immigrated to this country, caire Rast
from San Francisco to pursue his studies
for the Presb-, teriau ministry at Prince
ton College. His health wns~feehle, and
it was thought best for him to spend his
vacation as much in the open air as
possible. He accordingly hired himself
to a farmer in Rucks county, Pa., and
spent the summer in out-door occupation
of a light character.
A few weeks ago. when the Pacific
railroad had just been completed, and
the public were still talking of the last
spike with the golden head, n youug
lady purchased in Philadelphia one of
the very first through tickets for San
Francisco. She was the fair daughter
of a Quaker fanner, who lived near where
the youug Germau student had becu
employed during his vacation. They
had met, loved, and engaged to be
married. Rut his health had grown
worse, and his family had sent for him
to como back to California. Letters
from hin? to the Rucks county farm-house
told only of still further decline. The
young girl pined under her trouble. At
lust, one Saturday, came a telegram
asking her to come to him tit once. Her
betrothed was sinking fast. On Tuesday
she was on her way. Tho road of iron
that spans the continent was safely tra
versed, and she reached San Francisco.
The rest of the story is briefly told.
The newspapers of Kastern Pennsylvania
a month ago announced under the head
of "Married" the wedding in San Francis
co, Juno 24th, of a gentleman of that
city to a lady of Bucks county, Pa.
Following it under the head of "Died,"
Sau Francisco, June 25th, was the name
of 'die husband. The wedding had heeu
by a death-bed. The Quaker girl was
the bride of a day.
A Successful Career.?In the
early rush to California, a poor boy,
nanioil Charles Crocker, crossed the Mis
souri with an ox team at Omaha, on his
toilsomo overlnud journey to tho new
gold regions. Nineteen years afterward
to a day, ho arrived at Omaha on his
first return visit to his old Mastern home.
He came accompanied by. his family, in
his own special car, for ho is now Super
intendent of the Central Pacific Railroad,
and every mile of it has becu built un
der his supervision. He may well feel
an honorable pride in the great work
with which ho has beon so closely identi
fied. His party were four days from
Sacramento to Omaha; and on arriving
there delighted the citizens with bloom
ing floowors, and feasted them upon ber
ries, oranges and luscious cherries from
California, brought upon Alaska ico,
1,000 miles, through the green valloy of
the Pacific elope, aud through the linger
ing snow drifts of the Rocky Mountains.
It seems like a story from the Arabian
Knights.
i?
They have big trees in Texas. The
large court house of Navarro county is
said to have been covered with shingles
made from a single cedar tree. The oaks,
pecans and cedar of that section of the
country attain an imtnonse size. A pe
can treo in Navarro county, on the banks
of the Trinity, measured tweuty-thrco
feet in circumference. The cedars are
often more than 100 feet high.?Hosten
